For 100 years, Catholics around the world have come together on World Mission Sunday to pray for missionaries and support the young and growing Churches they serve.
This year, Pope Leo XIV is inviting us to carry that legacy forward.
In a new video for the 100th anniversary of World Mission Sunday, the Holy Father reflects on his own connection to this extraordinary day—from celebrating it as a boy in the United States to experiencing the prayers and generosity of Catholics around the world during his missionary ministry in Peru.
And what a difference a century has made.
In 1925, mission territories included 296 jurisdictions and about 9.6 million Catholics. Today there are 1,131 mission territories serving more than 346 million Catholics through more than 41,000 parishes. They are also home to 124,309 Catholic schools and 26,318 social institutions.
Behind those numbers are generations of Catholics who prayed, sacrificed and gave—often for brothers and sisters they would never meet.
Now it is our turn.

Since Pope Pius XI established it in 1926, World Mission Sunday has gathered Catholics everywhere in prayer and support for the missions. On October 18, the Church celebrates its hundredth World Mission Sunday.

What an extraordinary honor for The Pontifical Mission Societies USA!

On September 25, immediately following the beatification of Fulton Sheen, we received the Mission and Humanitarian Impact Award at the inaugural Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Awards.

Bishop John Barres of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, and Chairman of our Board of Directors, accepted the award on behalf of TPMS USA. Also present for the occasion were members of our National Office and diocesan directors from across the country.

To receive this recognition in the name of Archbishop Sheen—one of the great missionary voices of the Church in the United States and a former National Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith—is a profound honor.

We receive it with gratitude, and above all as an encouragement to continue the mission he championed so tirelessly: bringing the Gospel to the ends of the earth and supporting the missionaries who serve some of the world’s most vulnerable communities.

May Blessed Fulton Sheen continue to inspire all of us to be missionaries wherever God has placed us.
