✨ Street Heroes Vendor Spotlight: Mido’s Halal Food! ✨

Mido's Halal is a multigenerational family business that has grown over the past 25 years on the streets of New York. Mohamed Essa came to the US in 2000 from Mansoura, in Egypt’s Nile Delta, and began selling hot dogs from a cart on 18th and 6th Ave in 2001. By 2008, riding the expansion of halal food across the city, he expanded the business to a chicken over rice cart. Mohamed’s sons Salah and Momen joined their father in the US in 2013, and within a couple years were working in the family business.

As they learned the ropes working at their father’s business, Salah and Momen began to innovate and expand, and by 2017 had opened a new location at 58th and 9th. Less than 10 years later, Mido’s now has four locations across the city, including both carts and a food truck, and the business continues to grow. The family has known about SVP for many years and earlier this year worked with the organization to protect their spot in the face of harassment from neighbors and police.

The Street Vendor Project Applauds the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection’s (DCWP) Final General Vendor Waitlist Rule

“This rule reflects the new era of economic justice advanced by DCWP and the Mamdani administration. After hearing testimony from vendors, DCWP made important changes to ensure the proposed process will be fair and efficient,” said Mohamed Attia, Managing Director of the Street Vendor Project. “For 47 years, the City of New York arbitrarily capped the number of General Vendor License to 853, forcing generations of our city’s smallest small business owners to work in the shadows. This rule is the next step to ensuring vendors can finally operate in a fair and well-regulated system that benefits all New Yorkers. We thank Commissioner Sam Levine and the staff of DCWP for ensuring the voices of vendors were heard. DCWP’s unparalleled commitment to community engagement and effective co-governance is a model for all city agencies.”

Rollin Bagels Rollin Bagels is a Queens-born NYC bagel brand founded by Quentin Guntur in 2023, serving fresh, hand-rolled bagels from its truck and cart. Based in Long Island City, Rollin Bagels has grown from a neighborhood ritual into a citywide favorite, popping up across the city for community events, private catering, and brand activations for Nike, Runna, G-Star RAW, Coffee Meets Bagel, and the New York Mets, to name a few.

✨ Street Heroes Vendor Spotlight: Kunafa Bites ✨

Kunafa Bites is a fusion of the best desserts that Egypt 🇪🇬 and Palestine 🇵🇸 have to offer, with global twists that reflect the blend of cultures in New York. Co-founders Hussein and Mohamed met while both working at al-Sham Sweets, the beloved Palestinian bakery in the heart of Astoria’s Steinway Street. Working with the people behind al-Sham, they started preparing to take their dessert out of the shop and onto the street two years ago, and finally launched their dessert truck – New York City’s first! – earlier this year.

Hussein is from Egypt, and is proud to offer some of his culture’s favorite sweet treats, from baklava to petit fours, and runs the business side of the operation. Mohamed, who is Palestinian and came to New York from Jordan, is the chef, and proudly shares his culture’s desserts with New Yorkers from all backgrounds. Their cart, which is open until midnight every night on 31st and Ditmars, is most popular for its traditional kunafa 😋, which keeps customers coming back night after night.

As managing director of the Street Vendor Project, Attia helped lead the campaign that, this past January, finally broke a New York City vending permit cap that had been frozen since 1979. He talks with Matt about his own path from vendor to advocate, and we go over so many great carts to visit in New York City.

We are thrilled to announce ✨Charlie Goldensohn .chuck and Undocubougie ✨ will be the MC and DJ at our 5th Annual Gala, Street Heroes, on October 6, 2026!

Charlie Goldensohn was born and raised in the Mission District of San Francisco, and is known by many as “Chez Chuck” online. He is a political strategist, activist, creator, food lover, proud East Villager, and political commentator whose career has spanned presidential campaigns, the White House, and work advising global changemakers and humanitarian organizations. Charlie served as Impact Advisor to Chef José Andrés, founder of World Central Kitchen, working with Chef Andrés on his philanthropic and political work, and shaping how that work was communicated through compelling impact storytelling. Today, Charlie creates political commentary and analysis across social media and is the co-founder of Badlands, a progressive digital media agency that helps campaigns, candidates, organizations, causes, and leaders tell their stories and persuade.

Diana Chacon, aka DJ Undocubougie is a Peruvian-born artist, based in Queens, New York. She is an event curator, DJ and immigrant rights community organizer. Diana aims to bridge two worlds. She utilizes music to bring community together to heal from oppressive cys-tems. She has brought her sound across Seattle, Los Angeles and New York - to spaces such as MoMA PS1, SOB’s and First Saturdays at Brooklyn Museum. She is also the founder of ***r —a monthly pop-up pachanga & collective in Jackson Heights. Arrebato Q***r was Founded in 2019 by current and formerly undocumented Trans and q***r migrants, Arrebato is a space honoring TGNCQ, Black and brown women and femmes in Jackson Heights. Diana began Arrebato with the belief that while borders keep us apart, music and joy can bring us back home. She hopes for Arrebato to become a permanent location in Queens in the near future.
