This Freedom Fighter Friday, we remember American civil rights activist Makaza Kumanyika (formerly Herb Callender) (1933-1993). One of the original 1961 Freedom Riders, Kumanyika played a central role in putting Bronx CORe on the map. His actions made him a target of the NYPD, which planted an undercover agent in the chapter and had Kumanyika detained at Bellevue for a short time. His name means “a cold wind blows for Black people.”

We launched Freedom Agenda in October 2020 with a commitment to continue the vital work of building power with directly impacted people to decarcerate New York City, transform our approach to public safety, and bring the closure of Rikers Island to the finish line.

Today on our 6th anniversary, we're excited about the momentum we've built to achieve those goals, and we're grateful for your support and partnership. We know it will take continued collective action to move our city in the direction of true safety and justice. To commemorate our work and the community it’s built, we’re sharing some photos from these last 6 years. We wish it was possible to represent all of our amazing members in just 10 photos, but we tried to get as many as possible!

We’re glad to have a mayor who recognizes the need to close , and we look forward to a budget that reflects that. Listen to Liv Freiwald share how they would reallocate the billions of dollars currently wasted on Rikers to achieve true community safety.

On August 31, one year before the legal deadline to Close Rikers, the Campaign to held a Countdown to Closing Rikers Day of Action. Singers from our friends at Bway Advocacy Coalition sang a special song just for the event, "Can We Afford It?"

With focused action from City Hall, we can significantly reduce the number of people in Rikers by August 31, 2027, and put our City clearly back on the path to closing Rikers with urgency!

On this Memorial Monday we remember Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo, who was 20 years old at the time of his death on September 16, 2026.

Rikers is still a humanitarian crisis, one which took 15 lives last year and has now taken seven more this year. To sign your organization on to stand with the many organizations demanding the closure of Rikers Island, visit our linktree and click on “Sign onto our Campaign to Close Rikers.”

This Freedom Fighter Friday, we remember American civil rights activist Herbert Lee (d.1961). A cotton farmer by trade, Lee joined the NAACP and worked in the early 1960s to educate voters, until he was shot and killed by white state Re. E.H. Hurst on September 25, 1961 while doing his work. Hurst falsely claimed self-defense and was never arrested.

Last night, we were proud to gather at First Baptist Church of Crown Heights with dozens of community members to discuss the deep interconnection between economic justice and racial justice for Black communities in New York City, and dismantling mass incarceration. The panel was moderated by Morgan Scott at News 12 Brooklyn and included Dr. Divine Pryor at NAACP NYS, Maya Williams at NYC Racial Justice Commission, and our Co-Director Darren Mack. Reverend Dr. Rashad Moore delivered the opening remarks.

New York City must reduce the number of people in jail in order to follow the law and close the jails on Rikers Island. To put pressure on judges to do their part, Freedom Agenda is hosting group court watching sessions in support of Court Watch NYC's Campaign.

Join us on Friday, Oct 2nd, from 2-5pm to observe arraignments in Manhattan Criminal Court, where one of NYC's most punitive judges will be presiding. Join us in the court room to learn about criminal court proceedings, to capture vital data about bail negotiations, and to remind NYC judges that New Yorkers are watching them.
