Occupy Wall St. Think Tank

Occupy Wall St. Think Tank The OWS Think Tank is an official working group within the OWS movement. Anyone can suggest a topic and anyone can join in.

The think tank is stationed within Liberty Plaza, but we aim for global participation amongst all Occupy movements. Last night's Occupy Think Tank show on WBAI (99.5 NYC) was on the fiscal cliff. The conversation of course went elsewhere as the fiscal cliff was deemed more fictitious than substantive, and even perhaps more fear-mongering legitimate. We ended up talking about politics, control, governmental spending, and how little of any of that most people living in America have. Enjoy.

So as many of you may have noticed, we were knocked a little off kilter by Hurricane Sandy, as was WBAI’s studios. There still is no normal phone service there so the shows have been studio guests...

Wbai has finally come through the storm and will be back on the air! This Wednesday's show on Occupy Wall St. Radio will discuss Hurricane Sandy. We can go in many directions with the discussion: the logistics of emergency response, the political ramifications of relief and reconstruction efforts, low income and racial outcomes of efforts. Obviously we'd love to have a strong component and representation of people working with Occupy Sandy, and will be discussing Occupy's efforts to help rebuild local communities as well as the debate over the public versus private provisions of relief services. We will be taking listeners calls regarding their experiences and what they think these types of emergency services should look like. We are also looking for about 8 in studio guests. Please rsvp asap. We would ask guests to be in the studio between 5:45 and 6pm for Wednesday's show. Thank you.

An account about relief efforts in chinatown yesterday:
"many of us spent the entire day in chinatown at the CAAAV office talking to residents; manning our portable generator/cell phone charging station; handing out food, water, flashlights, and batteries; and going door to door in buildings to make sure people are okay and have what they need.

at one point, almost ten cops came with their lights flashing to tell us we had to stop, because all the people on the sidewalk were creating a "safety hazard," and they were worried about "rioting" and "theft of iPhones." they said this was all in the name of "helping the community."

they made several announcements to the crowd of residents to disperse, at no point letting us interpret what they were saying so that the crowd of mostly chinese mandarin/cantonese/fujianese speakers could understand what the cops were telling them.

we were able to negotiate with them to keep our adhoc relief center open, but it was a stark reminder of who actually keeps our communities strong and resilient - our residents and our neighborhood organizations who actually give a damn.

at no point did we see anyone else from a city agency, or any relief agency (red cross, where you and your billions at?), or any elected officials office.

SO MUCH LOVE to caaav members, staff, volunteers, and supporters who came out today to help. i'm feeling very tender-hearted today towards the city that i love and its people who keep it going."

Forwarded account of situation in Red Hook:
"I am here at red hook initiative to volunteer. the situation down here is bad. they are saying 7-10 days without power. people are definitely getting very frustrated. at night it's very dangerous. people's basements are flooded and they are running out of food and light with no end in sight. my impression is that there is zero effective city response here.

people here are very short on supplies. the stores down here are out. if anyone can shop where you are and drive these things here that would be great:

- candles (big bags of the little tea lights are great)
- flashlights
- batteries
- non perishable food, esp canned goods

there is a community meeting and rally today at 4pm at "the flagpole". i'm not from here so i don't know what that is. but if you can spread around to any relevant networks, do so. please forward this email to whoever you think is relevant.

NYC Rescue Mission is in desperate need of a generator. They are a homeless shelter that's been around since 1872 and might have to close its doors for the first time ever if they don't get one soon. Call them at (212) 226-6214 or visit them at 90 Lafayette Street to see if they still need one.

Tomorrow's Occupy Think Tank on Occupy Wall St. Radio will look at Hurricane Sandy (the "Frankenstorm"), the logistics of emergency response, and the political ramifications of relief and reconstruction efforts. We will also discuss Occupy's efforts to help rebuild local communities and the debate over the public versus private provision of relief services. The show will be on wbai.org and 99.5 in nyc from 6:30-7 wednesday. We will be taking listeners calls (212.209.2900) regarding what they think these types of emergency services should look like, and are also looking for in studio guests. Please rsvp to this email address for either. We would ask guests to be in the studio between 5:45 and 6pm for the show.
