“If you can help me get a job, I won’t sell drugs.” Early in her career as a corrections officer for youth, Teresa Goines heard this statement from numerous young people who wanted to follow the right path once they got out of jail. But they were not given any opportunities to make money legally so they often turned back to the crimes for which they got arrested. Through a lot of prayer and hard work, Teresa created those opportunities herself through a unique nonprofit business – a San Francisco supper club named Old Skool Cafe – that continues to serve as a beacon of hope for formerly incarcerated young people and at-risk youth. We discussed her work recently on “Christopher Closeup.” Read about and/or listen to the interview at the link in the first comment:

Joe LaHood grew up in somewhat unusual circumstances. His parents, Dan and Cubby, turned their Maryland home into a daycare center that welcomed children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and they named it St. Joseph’s House. As a result, Joe and his siblings developed a closeness to a group of people that society often prefers to hide away. In recent years, Joe and his wife Natalie took over the the running of St. Joseph’s House, moving it into their own home, where they are raising their five children. Joe and Natalie joined us on “Christopher Closeup” to discuss their work, how it serves as an extension of their faith, and how it reflects a slice of heaven on earth. For Phil Rosenthal, food has been a vehicle to create familial bonds throughout his career, from his days creating the hit sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond” with Ray Romano, to his travel series “Somebody Feed Phil,” to his opening a diner named “Max and Helen’s” in his parents’ honor. His goals are not just to entertain viewers, but to promote kindness and friendship while making people laugh and filling stomachs (including his own). Phil joined us recently on “Christopher Closeup” to discuss his life and work. READ AND/OR LISTEN IN FIRST COMMENT:

At the height of Darryl Strawberry’s baseball career, his mother Ruby prayed that God would knock him “off his throne.” The reason? Despite having established himself as a premier home run hitter and winning World Series with both the Mets and Yankees, Darryl struggled with addiction, womanizing, and other issues that were creating chaos in his life. Ruby simply wanted her son to be “humbled’ and “saved.” Though it took many years, Ruby’s prayer was answered when Darryl made the decision to surrender his life to Christ and devote himself to preaching God’s word. He shares his healing journey in the new memoir “Another Life: Discovering the Healing Power of Purpose on My Long Journey From Player to Preacher,” and we discussed it recently on “Christopher Closeup." The Christophers mourn the passing of Dolly Parton, an entertainer and artist whose heart and soul added light to our world through her music, storytelling, and selfless acts of giving. Dolly won several Christopher Awards over the years for TV movies inspired by her life and faith. And when she was interviewed on "Christopher Closeup" in 2020, she declared that whatever talent she had was a gift from God. That's why she was so committed to using it well. Here is a link to that interview. Eternal rest grant unto Dolly Parton, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace. Amen.

“I always try to remember what Christmas is really about, and that’s the birth of Christ.” So said country music legend Dolly Parton when I interviewed her recently about her new projects, includin…
