The PSWG is hosting another Book Club on Thursday, August 6th at 7pm. RSVP for location.

This month, we’ll be reading the first section of Heaven Looks Like Us: Palestinian Poetry, edited by George Abraham and Noor Hindi. This anthology gathers Palestinian poetry across years, borders, and languages to rail against dispossession and work towards a free Palestine.

The first section, titled “Our bags are always ready,” grapples with exile, housing and document precarity, and the meanings and resonances of place. In reading these poems together, we’ll consider questions like: what are the legacies of Palestinian poetry, and resistance poetry more broadly? How can poetry serve as a counterpoint to oppressive mythmaking? How can the personal narrative, individual and collective accounts, be used to assert, to trouble, to assemble, to mobilize?

As the poet Sarona Abuaker writes, “and you, landlord, settler, state / need to remember whose f*cking land you’re on.”

This month in CHTU’s Palestine Solidarity Book Club we’ll be taking our first jump into fiction with “Letter from Gaza” from acclaimed Palestinian author Ghassan Kanafani’s “Men in the Sun and Other Palestinian Stories”. The narrator of the story, and we along with him, confront the material consequences of dispossession, injury, and occupation violence. The story examines unflinching liberation politics from a critical distance, as well as through ambiguous character detail. Through this, we’ll ask and attempt to answer questions such as how do we consider the role of personal experience and opportunity in testimony and storytelling in our orientation towards historical solidarity movements? How does this story demands us to practice dialectics in our staunch values and tenant collectivism? How can our imagination be short-sighted in our work for an improved material future? What does fiction offer when it comes to characterization of Palestinian joy, revolution and the eternal seizure of life and territory? Given Kanafani’s contribution and literary scope- what accounts for glaring gaps in western literary analysis of Zionist texts, in tandem with our deep preoccupation with first person Palestinian “storytelling”?
