Last month from April 13th–17th, Digital Girl Inc did a new thing! We held our very first in person international one week workshop on the beautiful island in the sun, Barbados!

This transformative workshop, sponsored in part by the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited, taught scholars ages 13–16 to fight cyber threats, recognize cyber scams & phishing, own their digital footprints, and level up their financial literacy. Then they took everything they learned and built their very own digital safety campaigns using HTML, CSS & JavaScript — presenting them live at their Student Cyber Showcase in front of proud family and community leaders. 🖥️✨

From learning to DOING in just 5 days. That’s the Digital Girl Inc. difference.

This was the first stop of our Codes the Diaspora initiative — bringing world-class STEM education to girls across the African diaspora, rooted in cultural pride and global possibility. 🌍🖤💛

A huge thank you to the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited for their vision, hospitality, and trust that we would execute the best STEM workshop that Barbados has ever seen! 🌟🙌🏾

Bohlale Mphahlele, a 16-year-old student from a technical high school in South Africa, developed an innovative safety device called the Alerting Earpiece. Designed to look like a normal earring, it discreetly contains a micro camera, GPS tracking, and a hidden panic button. When activated, it silently captures images of an attacker and sends emergency alerts along with the victim’s real time location to trusted contacts and emergency services, without drawing attention or escalating danger. Her idea was inspired by the severe issue of gender based violence in South Africa, where statistics show that a significant number of women face abuse in their lifetime and many cases go unreported. Her invention earned her a bronze medal at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists and gained recognition in South Africa’s National Assembly. Education leaders praised her creativity, calling her an example of youth innovation addressing real world problems in society today.
