Fall read, FARMING WHILE BLACK: SOUL FIRE FARM’S PRACTICAL GUIDE TO LIBERATION ON THE LAND by Leah Penniman! “…While the land was the “scene of the crime,” she was never the criminal. Our people mistakenly strive to divorce ourselves from her in an effort to get free. But without the land we cannot be free.”

Ecology Village is right here in Brooklyn! You can still hear the cars in the distance though you’re in the “woods.” It’s definitely great for first time campers.

Children of the Sun: Paying Homage the Earth (CS:PHE) is the brainchild of a Vincentian born Womyn, named Cheyanne Alisha Smith.
As a youth, Cheyanne participated in multiple camping and service trips; often feeling like (she, he, they) didn’t truly belong. Being one of the few or only Black Womyn on a trip meant being ignored, doubted, and pitied, and alone. Other participants came from privileged backgrounds where trekking through Indigenous lands was just another recreational weekend activity.
Instead of encouraging friends to participate in similar trips, Cheyanne decided to create Children of the Sun: Paying Homage to the Earth. (She, he they) wanted to create opportunities for other BIPOC to build relationships while sharpening the tools needed to protect ourselves, our communities and the Earth.
To breathe fresh air, eat healthy food, and have access to clean water should be a necessity not a privilege. BIPOC around the world are suffering due to the vile actions of those who cannot comprehend the importance of an Elephants journey or a child’s laughter.
The planet is fighting back against capitalism and its effect; Climate Change! It is our duty to fight with and for her. As Earth’s original people, we owe it to ourselves, our communities, and to the Earth to protect each other.
Vision: Reconnect BIPOC to the Earth
Mission: Provide opportunities for BIPOC to participate in activities (i.e, camping, farming, sailing, etc.) that are centered around cultivating deeper connections to ourselves, our community, and the Earth.
Encourage BIPOC to return to the practice of planting our own food, traveling to exchange lived experiences, and receiving what we need from the Earth and sharing what we don’t use.
Goals:
Enjoy and respect the essence of the Earth and all living things
Instill the importance of gratitude and accountability
Rebuild and re-nourish ourselves, our communities, and the Earth
Plant at least one tree a month
Provide shelter, food and water to everyone in need
Practice self-care
Recognize the need to protect ourselves, our communities, and the Earth by any means necessary
Uproot the systems that cause harm to our BEing and the Earth (i.e, capitalism, colonialism, racism, sexism, colorism, imperialism, etc.)
Uplift the interdependence of technology and the humxn mind as innovative
Debunk the myth that, “Black people don’t do that sh!t” because we did it FIRST!
