To celebrate Brooklyn Art Haus’s 3rd Anniversary Ball, we put together a highlight reel of HIKAYAT performances, our signature performance arts series that has brought SWANA artists to their stage time and again.

From bold new choreography to genre-defying sound and movement, this is a glimpse of the space we’ve built together over the years, and the artists who have shared their work with us along the way.

A huge thank you to every performer featured here, and to Brooklyn Art Haus (Brooklyn Art Haus) for screening it at such a special milestone celebration.

We still feel immensely grateful for this special honor. ❤️

ArteEast was incredibly honored to be recognized by Brooklyn Art Haus at their 3rd Anniversary Ball, celebrating an amazing milestone—2,000 performances—and their exciting new chapter as a nonprofit.

Brooklyn Art Haus has been a wonderful partner and the home of so many memorable 𝗛𝗜𝗞𝗔𝗬𝗔𝗧 performances - our signature performance arts series. Together, we’ve created space for SWANA artists to share bold, interdisciplinary performance, and we’re deeply grateful for their belief in our mission and for all we’ve built together.

A heartfelt thank you to our board member 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶 𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗼 (Mari Spirito), who accepted the award on ArteEast’s behalf with such warmth and grace.

Throwback to 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠, our HIKAYAT gathering on Governors Island, presented as part of artist Bahar Behbahani’s 𝘋𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘬 𝘙𝘰𝘴𝘦: 𝘈 𝘎𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨, commissioned by the Governors Island Trust on May 16th, 2026.

Rooted in the Damask Rose and inspired by Persian garden traditions, the collective performative discussion opened with a multiplayer experimental chess game, prompting participants to contemplate the SWANA region’s future amidst protracted war and genocide. Offerings were shared, dialogue unfolded organically, and rose infused teas and sweets were served to all who gathered at Liggett Terrace.

Grateful to our participants Aminah Al Huqail (Aminah), Garine Boghossian (Garine Boghossian (կարին)), Mani Nilchiani (Mani Nilchiani), Sarah Riggs (Sarah Riggs), Nooshin Rostami, Ali Ugurlu (Ali), and Hrag Vartanian (Hrag Vartanian) for weaving this living tapestry of memory, history and survival with us. We were also overjoyed to have organized programs alongside our friends and partners: ACAF, Leeza Ahmady (Leeza Ahmady), New York Kurdish Cultural Center (Kurdish Cultural Center), Xeyal Qertel (Xeyal Q), Eat Off Beat (Eat Offbeat | Catering & Global Eats), and Basir Shakeri (Bas!r).

✦ New Artist Spotlight: 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝗞𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗵𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗱𝗶

“I try always to understand exactly where the personal touches the collective — I don’t separate them, ever.”

Filmmaker, visual artist, and keeper of archives. Born in Tehran before the revolution, Khoshnoudi has spent decades making work at the intersection of memory, exile, and political erasure across documentary, fiction, and experimental film.

Her latest feature, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘝𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵, weaves personal archives and intimate testimony into a meditation on Iran’s unfinished histories of disappearance. In conversation with writer and film scholar Tania Ahmadi, she speaks about form, collaboration, memory, and what it means to make a film about a place you can no longer safely return to.

𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 ✦ Apply by July 30!

2026-2027 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 with ArteEast!

We are excited to partner with the National Network for Arab American Communities (NNAAC) to host a Fellow for the 2026–2027 program year. This unique opportunity is designed for undergraduate juniors, seniors, graduate students, or recent graduates interested in arts and culture, community engagement, and nonprofit leadership.

About the Transformative Leaders Fellowship:

Fellows will:

✅ Work 16 hours per week with ArteEast, gaining hands-on experience in nonprofit administration, grant writing, fundraising, communications, community programming, and more.

✅ Receive a $6,000 stipend distributed in three installments over the fellowship term (September 2026 – June 2027).

✅ Attend an in-person orientation in Dearborn, Michigan (September 30 – October 1, 2026) – Mandatory

✅ Engage in monthly virtual trainings and mentorship with NNAAC and ArteEast staff.

✅ Design and implement a signature project by the conclusion of the fellowship.

Primary Outcomes:

🔹 Build knowledge and skills for a successful career in the nonprofit sector.
🔹 Develop competencies around social and cultural issues impacting communities.
🔹 Contribute meaningful service and support to ArteEast’s mission
