You may know this year’s special guest Emcee Afeef Nessouli’s work as a producer and host of the interview series “With Afeef Nessouli”, and the new podcast “Don’t Call Me Habibi” where he gets first person narratives from Arabs and Iranians in and out of the region sharing voice notes of their day to day lives. He is also a journalist with The Intercept covering Palestine, Lebanon and Syria. He has previously worked for Spotify and The Wall Street Journal, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and CNN. Afeef spent 9 weeks in Gaza as a humanitarian aid worker in 2025 and also covered the war in Lebanon in 2026 from Beirut.

Join us October 8 for 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙢𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙨: 𝙏𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨. 𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙪𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝙝𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮, a new performance piece by Rawya El Chab, followed by an artist talk, presented as part of ArteEast’s HIKAYAT performance series.

Premiering at the Immigrant Artist Biennial, this 45-minute work in progress draws on three works by El Chab—𝘓𝘶𝘭𝘢 19/85, 𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳, and 𝘐𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘭—to follow one family across pivotal moments in modern Lebanese history and the collapse of the Lebanese left. Storytelling, shadow puppetry, archival material, projection, and spatial sound come together in the first public iteration of an evolving theatrical cycle.

Hrag Vartanian (he/they) is an art critic, curator, artist, editor, and podcaster. He co-founded Hyperallergic, an independent art publication, in 2009 with his spouse, Veken Gueyikian.

Under Vartanian’s leadership as editor-in-chief (2009–2025), Hyperallergic grew to reach millions of readers per year and is credited with revitalizing arts journalism as audiences moved online.

Vartanian has been a visiting artist and critic at the Brooklyn College, Indiana University, New Mexico State University, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, University of California–Davis, UNLV, Vanderbilt University, and other institutions. He was a Poynter Fellow at Yale University in 2024. He served as a lead mentor at the Chautauqua School of Art from 2019–2022.

In 2023, he was awarded the Susan C. Larsen Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rabkin Foundation for Visual Arts Writing.

Mona Chalabi is an award-winning writer and illustrator who uses data as the foundation for her work.

By translating complex statistics, Mona has earned a Pulitzer Prize, fellowships at the British Science Association and Royal Society for the Arts as well as an Emmy nomination. In 2025, she was named a Royal Designer for Industry.

In recent years, her art has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Design Museum, the Tate, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Design Museum. Her work can also be found at The New Yorker, The Guardian, Netflix, NPR, the BBC and National Geographic. She is also the executive producer and creative director of an animated TV show with Ramy Youssef and A24. She studied international relations in Paris and Arabic in Jordan.

Mona’s first book Ten Lives will be published in November 2026.

✦ New Artist Spotlight: 𝗥𝗮𝘄𝘆𝗮 𝗘𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗯

Check out the interview with Rawya El Chab, a New York City-based theater maker and storyteller who weaves together archival research, poetry, and audiovisual technology to amplify voices from history’s margins. Her recent productions include “Lula 19/85 & the Pearl of the Bekaa” at La MaMa and “Crossing the Water” at The Brick.

Speaking with ArteEast, El Chab reflects on her practice, saying, “I am a storyteller.” Whether she is combing through archives or interviewing people, she sets official records against collective memory, countering the erasure of Lebanon’s past.

Her new performance, The Immortals: Three stories. One unfinished history, is presented by ArteEast on October 8 at 7pm at Brooklyn Art Haus. Presented in partnership with the Immigrant Artist Biennial, this 45-minute work in progress follows one family across modern Lebanese history and the collapse of the Lebanese left through storytelling, shadow puppetry, projection, and spatial sound. Part of our HIKAYAT performance series, it will be followed by a conversation with the artist.
