🦋 SETTER SPOTLIGHT 🦋

Today we’re featuring ! Read about her journey into routesetting below.

Where do you currently set or have set at? “Südbloc, Bouldergarten, South Rock and other climbing and bouldering gyms around Berlin.”

How and when did you get into setting?
“I started working at Südbloc in 2016 to do birthdays and kids classes, but then quickly got into routesetting for bouldering when I dropped out of my bachelor’s degree and had some time to kill and I loved it so much that I stopped doing anything else at the gym and now am a self employed routesetter. Then just this past year I got into setting climbing routes when a former colleague and regular at südbloc asked me to set at the climbing gym he took over.”

Do you have any favorite holds?
“I loooove the flathold damage control series, especially the slopery holds. I really like setting with slopers in general at the moment because I feel like it’s easier to force specific movement with them.”

What types of routes/problems do you like to set?
“Sketchy feet and a lot of body tension and hooks are things I set a lot and really enjoy climbing as well. At the moment I’m also really enjoying setting coordinative boulders.”

What advice or guidance do you have to other marginalized and underrepresented folx who want to learn to set?
“Be persistent in asking to set at your local gyms; although this can be really difficult to do at the beginning, it’s key! At my home gym, from what I’ve heard there are quite a few men asking to set at any given time) and if you’re lucky enough to live in a place that already has some women/q***r/non-white folx in setting then try and connect with them. That has really helped me in my setting journey!”

What climbing-related accounts do you love and recommend people follow?
“ are all absolute crushers and for anyone in Germany.”

Is there anything else you would like us to know?
“I really love this page and I hope it inspires many women and q***r folx to get into routesetting because we really, desperately need more diverse setting teams and women setting in comps!”

💫SETTER SPOTLIGHT💫

Today we’re featuring Kzarina Leonardo (), a New York based routesetter and B&R Clinic Instructor! Show her some love and scroll through for some valuable insights from her journey in setting!

Where do you currently set or have set at?

“I mainly set at MetroRock Bushwick and have guest set at GP81! :)”

How and when did you get into setting?

“Though setting has only been in my official job description for a little over a year now, I am no stranger to the culture and community surrounding it. Over my seven years in the climbing industry, I’ve always found myself gravitating toward routesetters. Setting has long been a curiosity of mine, but for a while, I didn’t have the opportunity—or the confidence—to pursue it. That changed when I moved to New York City. I proposed an apprenticeship to MetroRock because I was eager and strong-willed to begin my setting journey. Shortly after starting my position as Marketing Manager at MetroRock, I was offered the chance to begin my apprenticeship. I’m proud of myself for not giving up on my dream to set.

And wow—routesetting has completely changed my life. Routesetting is the true career path that I am determined to pursue. Moreover, it continuously challenges me in ways I couldn’t have imagined: physically, mentally, and emotionally.”

Do you have any favorite holds?

“This answer honestly changes monthly. For right now, I’ve been loving the Fuego series by Trango.”

What types of routes/problems do you like to set?

“Just like my favorite holds, it’s always changing! I try to challenge myself to set outside of my comfort zone of technical, crimpy, and powerful and set coordination, slopey, and compression climbs.”

🌀SETTER SPOTLIGHT🌀

Today we’re featuring ! Read all about her journey to routesetting below. 👇

Where do you currently set or have set at?
“I’m currently a full time freelance routesetter. I do commercial as well as competition routesetting moving around different gyms in France, Germany and Switzerland.”

How and when did you get into setting?
“I got into setting 3 years ago by coincidence as one of the previous routesetter left the climbing gym I used to work in. I instantly fell in love with routesetting and haven’t stopped since then!”

What types of routes/problems do you like to set?
“I love setting all kinds of dynamic problems. I think that exploring all the possibilities of this style to find a flowy movement, and then making it work at any grade is super satisfying!”

What advice or guidance do you have to other marginalized and underrepresented folx who want to learn to set?
“To me, there is still a lack of appropriate and inclusive programs to learn routesetting. More and more routesetters are rising against this unfair system by proposing their own workshops to create a safe space where anyone is free to be themselves and learn in a benevolent atmosphere.

Even though being part of a marginalized or underrepresented part of the population, remember that you are NOT ALONE. You are as legitimate as anyone else in the world of routesetting and it is thanks to you that climbing is such a wonderful sport.

Whenever you feel like you’re struggling to find your place or not being listened to, do not hesitate to speak to other routesetters who are committed to the question of inclusivity! They will be really happy to have a chat and give you some support and love!”

What climbing-related accounts do you love and recommend people follow?
“I really recommend the podcast named Grimposphère. It is hosted by two amazing girls who create great quality content about lots of different topics on climbing, bouldering, and routesetting.”

Is there anything else you would like us to know?
“I’m currently working on the creation of a routesetting course that would help women/LGBTQIA+ peeps take their stand in sometimes still very masculine teams.”

Big love to for shining a light on our mission to break down barriers in routesetting. 🧗‍♀️💥

Every bit of visibility helps push the movement forward. Thank you for helping us share why representation on the wall matters.

For 3 years, Bolt & Revolt has worked to strip away barriers and build a more inclusive routesetting community for women, trans, and gender non-conforming folks. We host clinics, create visibility, and build networks, all powered by volunteer work, donations and community support.

Our goal is to raise $3,000 to expand these efforts. Every donation counts, and every dollar enters you in our prize drawing with swag and climbing gear from our amazing partners.

Join us! Help elevate voices, grow opportunities, and strengthen our community.
