Being gay was already a crime in Ghana. Now simply supporting someone who is can land a person behind bars too - and much of the money behind the law traces straight back to the United States.

On Friday, Ghana's parliament approved the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill. It keeps the existing penalty of up to three years in prison for same-sex relationships, adds three to five years for funding or promoting anything LGBTQ, and creates a legal "duty to report" - meaning someone who knows a gay person and stays quiet could face prison themselves.

President John Dramani Mahama has already promised to sign it.

Here's the part that should land for anyone watching from the US: more than 20 American Christian groups have poured over $54 million into anti-gay campaigns across Africa since 2007, according to an openDemocracy investigation.

The same organizations that fought against marriage equality at home have spent years exporting the fight abroad - and in Ghana, they're one signature away from a win.

A law that punishes love is bad enough. This one punishes everyone who refuses to inform on it.
