We are so thankful for all of our Custom Date teams! These teams allow us to stay actively involved in our city year around and continue serving alongside our ministry partners, even outside of our regular programming dates. This past week, we had New Vision evangelizing in the quarter multiple afternoons! Thank you for being part of what God is doing in New Orleans!

We're praying through New Orleans one neighborhood at a time. Each week we'll focus on a different community, lifting up the churches, ministries, and schools God has placed there.

đź“– History
Long before New Orleans became a city, the 9th Ward was largely made up of wetlands and natural high ground along the Mississippi River. The name “9th Ward” came in 1852 when the city was divided into wards, and the area was mostly rural. Because of drainage issues and rising waters, levees and drainage systems were developed to make the area safer and allow for more growth.
Around the 1920s, the Industrial Canal was built, dividing the community into what we now know as the Upper 9th Ward and Lower 9th Ward. During the Civil Rights Movement, Ruby Bridges became the first African American child to attend the previously all-white William Frantz Elementary School in the 9th Ward.
The Lower 9th Ward has faced significant challenges from hurricanes and flooding. In 1965, Hurricane Betsy caused major flooding after levee failures. Forty years later, Hurricane Katrina caused catastrophic flooding when the levee and flood protection system failed. Many residents were displaced, and some never returned. However, many did return and have worked tirelessly to rebuild their homes and community. Today, the Lower 9th Ward continues to recover and rebuild.

đź“–History
The Bywater is a vibrant part of the city that is full of color and art. Historically before it was a neighborhood it was a natural river environment along the Mississippi. Slowly as New Orleans grew it turned into a neighborhood. It got its name for being by the water. There are many art galleries full of many different types of art. Music is a big part of New Orleans and the bywater has many small venues for live bands. The streets are lined with very colorful and unique buildings and houses. There are also many murals and street art on most blocks. If you are looking for some good food this neighborhood is a place to check out for some delicious restaurants. This part of the city has one of the highest percentages of LGBTQ+ in a community. The Bywater has many different spiritual influences and a lot of New Age Spiritism. It is home to a lot of active voodoo practice. We specifically send teams to this area because of the spiritual darkness. We want to be a light in the dark. One of the places we send people is Crescent Park. It is a nice park with great walking trails that goes right along the Mississippi river. The Bywater is a very unique part of town that we are glad to be very active in.

Did you know MissionLab hosts teams over 27 weeks out of the year?

This week we had a team from Beauregard Baptist Association serving alongside us in New Orleans, helping to do Unhoused Outreach and breakfast for the unhoused with Grace at the Greenlight.

Our ministry partners don't only need help in June and July. The food pantries, the church plants, the recovery ministries, and the nursing homes across this city are serving their neighbors all 52 weeks of the year.

Custom date year-round trips are a great fit for groups with flexible calendars like senior adult groups, Christian schools, college teams, and family groups!

Got a week your group could give? We'd love to host you!
