Juneteenth commemorates the freedom, fortitude, and lasting legacy of Black culture in the United States. Itโ€™s both a remembrance of our past and a celebration of the triumphs, traditions, and enduring spirit of community that continue to shape our future.

Here at home in Congo Square, enslaved people created space to nurture and exchange native cultures and traditions. At the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, we are proud to be stewards of this cherished heritage. Through annual programs like the Congo Square Rhythms Festival, we gather to celebrate the continuation of ancestral sounds, cuisine, art, and traditions that heavily influence our society today.

We invite you to experience Juneteenth celebrations being presented by organizations across the city, including the Louisiana Children's Museum's Juneteenth Celebration today, June 19th, from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm, supported in part by the 2025-2026 Community Partnership Grant program.

We wish you a meaningful and reflective Juneteenth!

The New Orleans music community has lost a remarkable talent with the passing of Ronell Johnson.

A gifted, self-taught musician, Ronell was best known as a trombonist and vocalist, but also played trumpet, piano, saxophone, and drums. He carried forward New Orleansโ€™ musical traditions while helping shape its future. Ronellโ€™s artistry could be heard on stages around the world, but his roots remained firmly planted in the city that inspired him.

โ€œHis love for music and community reverberated everywhere he went,โ€ Preservation Hall wrote in a social media post. โ€œWhether on stage, in the Hall, or in a passing conversation, his joy, kindness, and generosity left a lasting impact that we will always carry with us.

We at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, fellow musicians, and all who were touched by his music. His contributions to New Orleans culture will continue to resonate for years to come.

Today, June 9th, is International Archives Day, where we join the global archival community in celebrating the power of historical documentation and its essential role in our society. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Archive, located in the French Quarter, houses thousands of physical and digital artifacts, photos, film footage, recordings, and more, dating back to its founding over 50 years ago.

In addition to its vast collections, the Archive offers resources, including a searchable online Jazz Fest performer database, the usage of archival materials, and educational programming, including the Jazz Fest Volunteer Photographer Program, the Fellowship Research Grants, and the Allison Miner Lecture Series.

Led by Rachel Lyons, Archive & Cultural Heritage Director, the Archive works year-round to promote and protect the storied history and influence of the Jazz & Heritage Foundation, its assets, and programs.
