This summer, the American Red Cross has been in an unprecedented blood crisis. Over the month of June, blood inventory took a sharp dive into dangerously low levels. But because of YOUR contributions, blood inventory has seen a steady increase. Your donations have lifted nationwide blood inventory above that critical threshold.

Thank you. Thank you for rolling up your sleeves and giving the gift of life.

There is much more work to be done. The need for blood is constant, and a single large disaster may take us back down into critical levels. We hope that those of you who were first time donors this summer come back when eligible, and those of you who are long time regular donors continue to inspire others with your lifesaving donations.

PJ Doyle has been a Red Crosser since 1991, has deployed to more than 80 disasters, has been a lifelong advocate and instructor for International Humanitarian Law, and was honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence for her lifetime of humanitarian service.

Pj's dedication to the Red Cross mission has inspired many, and she has mentored innumerable Red Cross volunteers and staff alike.

Did you know that the majority of disasters that the Red Cross responds to every year are home fires?

After a home fire, Red Cross volunteers work with fire departments to connect with the family and provide help, such as a safe place to stay, financial assistance and emotional support.

The Minneapolis Fire Department says three firefighters were injured Monday battling a house fire on the city's north side.

We appreciate how many of you have answered the call to help save lives following the Red Cross declaration of the blood crisis in late July.

As a result, more critical blood products, including type O blood, are being delivered to hospitals to ensure patient care is not disrupted.

The Red Cross still urgently needs people to make and keep donation appointments now as we continue stabilizing the blood supply over the next several weeks. Schedule a time to give by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or using the Red Cross Blood Donor App.
