When Math Corps launched in New York back in 2023, Sojourner Truth Elementary came on board as one of our first school partners! This year, our partnership expanded to include Early Learning Corps, and we are so proud to collaborate in bringing additional support to some of Poughkeepsie's youngest learners.

Nearly 200 students received practice and skill-building in reading and math this school year – an achievement that wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of local tutors and the entire team at Sojourner Truth Elementary.

For Joshua, serving as a Math Corps tutor feels a little like coming full circle. Years ago, he was the one receiving Reading Corps tutoring support as a student in South St. Paul — making him keenly aware of what it feels like to need an extra boost to succeed.

As Joshua puts it, “I thought I would give back what was given to me."

Thanks to tutors like Joshua, more students are learning the foundational skills needed in the classroom and beyond. Check out our latest blog post to learn more about his journey and find tutoring opportunities near you!

Joshua once received tutoring support as a child. Today, as a recent high school graduate, he is giving back through service with Math Corps.

Over the course of her career, Karysta has always leaned into creative ventures. A former hairdresser and part-time paint instructor, she's now using her skills to help Math Corps students grow!

Karysta hopes to watch her students succeed far into the future. "I want to make a positive impact on future generations," she says. She may even extend her work with students to a new setting by pursuing a degree in child psychology.

Thank you for making a difference in your community, Karysta. We're so glad that tutoring with Math Corps has brought you so much joy!

ROCORI School District is home to three elementary schools that have adopted our high-impact tutoring model to help more students succeed! Across Cold Spring, John Clark, and Richmond Elementary Schools, tutors helped more than 175 students build their proficiency in reading and math this school year.

Among the leaders responsible for such great success is Mary Holmberg, principal of John Clark and Richmond Elementary Schools. Principal Holmberg was recently awarded Minnesota’s 2026 National Distinguished Principal, a testament to her strength as a leader and educator. We're proud to partner with her in ensuring local students have the skills needed to succeed.

As we look ahead to next school year, we're excited to continue our partnership with ROCORI School District! If you’re interested in exploring tutoring opportunities with Reading Corps or Math Corps, visit Join.ReadingandMath.org.
