Headwaters Foundation for Justice

Headwaters Foundation for Justice Advance equity. Demand inclusion. Transform Power. Trust in Community. Our mission is to amplify the power of community to advance equity and justice.

We are a Minneapolis-based community foundation that invests in grassroots organizing across Minnesota. We do this through grantmaking programs that support organizations and groups on the front lines of social change. Each of our programs invite people from the community to learn about and lead our grantmaking work. Since 1984, Headwaters has believed that the people who directly experience socie

tyโ€™s injustices are exactly the people who know the way to collective liberation. We fund a variety of groups, and we prioritize funding groups that are led by and for Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color. Our four core values are:

Advance Equity. Our work supports movements and systems change that lead to individual resiliency and community power. Demand Inclusion. People who are most affected by inequity are often left out of decision-making work. We insist on changing thatโ€”nationally, regionally, and locally. We grow power through community-led grantmaking, donor education, and leadership development. A community knows itself best, and its people need to lead the way to collective liberation. Our job is to listen to and support the solutions that will improve life for all Minnesotans.

In the face of increasingly uncertain times, our Native Community Grantmaking Circle gathered to reimagine ways the Fund of the Sacred Circle (FSC) could uplift Native equity, justice, and self-determination.

โ€ผ๏ธ Following "Operation Metro Surge," where ICE also targeted Native Americans, Native communities continue to face significant federal funding cuts, marginalization in the public sphere, and structural discrimination.

Our Native Community Grantmaking Circle includes Native community members, professionals, leaders, and activists. Wakinyan, our Native Communities Programs Officer, worked with Dr. Nicole Martin Rogers from Advance Consulting to facilitate a conversation about strategically facing these rapidly changing realities. The group is excited to keep building towards:

โ‡๏ธ Building Native philanthropic leadership, knowledge, and useful tools
โ‡๏ธ Strengthening the FSC community-led grantmaking centering Native values
โ‡๏ธ Uplifting the incredible and deeply important work of FSC Grantees

Thank you to our Native Community Grantmaking Circle for sharing your time, leadership, and joy in this work ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

The Bridging Ecosystem (BE) Fellowship recently kicked off with a weekend retreat! This opening retreat focused on healing justice, one of the three pillars of the fellowship ๐ŸŒฑ

The weekend gave fellows an opportunity to rest, experience different types of healing modalities, and connect with each other deeply. Pictured here are some of the BE Fellows and the art they created during the opening retreat.

As we roll out the fellowship's pilot year, we look forward to sharing updates with our Headwaters community! In the meantime, we invite you to get to know our participating grantee partners.

Our inaugural BE Fellowship organizations are:

๐Ÿ T.O.N.E.U.P.
๐Ÿ Soul of the Southside Festival
๐Ÿ Greater Minnesota Worker Center
๐Ÿ The Paper Lantern Project
๐Ÿ SWOP Minneapolis
๐Ÿ Healthcare Reparations Cooperative
๐Ÿ New Native Theatre
๐Ÿ ESHARA

We also want to extend a special thank you to our co-facilitators for the opening retreat, Ayo Clemons and Eiko Mizushima โค๏ธ
