The idea that businesses, organizations, and property owners of GFS are being asked to pay more than half a million dollars for a redesign they did not ask for or approve is unacceptable . But let's go back to where all of this began and put the blame for this corruption exactly where it belongs. The MPD, backed by the police union, the police chief and the mayor and the city council, murdered a man. As the GFS community and people from all over the world mourned and demanded change, investment, and justice, Dolal Idd was killed on Lyndale and Daunte Wright was killed in Brooklyn Center. Then Winston Smith was killed in Uptown and while we cried out, while we gathered ourselves to protest, while we listened to the lies they made up about the man they had just murdered, Mayor Jacob Fry sent Agape into GFS to remove the barricades and open the streets, paying them hundreds of thousands of dollars to do so.
Now, the Mayor thinks a redesign that the majority of people did not vote for should be paid for by those very same people. He knows he is forcing them out of their homes, He knows he is forcing business to close and organizations to shut down. And he knows the people who will be most affected are people of color. The cruelty is the point. It has always been the point.
Despite interference from the Mayor, community has never stopped protecting and fighting for the dignity of GFS. They have never stopped praying, offering mutual aid, or welcoming visitors that come from all over the world to see the memorial built not just to George Floyd but to all victims of state sanctioned violence - people like Philando Castille, Leneal Frazier, Amir Locke and Ricky Cobb II. As long as this is true, Black Visions will stand with the community of George Floyd Square.
