AK Connection and JangmiArts are so thankful to everyone who joined us for our minhwa workshops with Youngmi Chang 🎨

During our morning workshop for adult Korean Adoptees, participants explored minhwa techniques while painting a vase. In the afternoon, Korean Adoptees, Korean Americans, families, and loved ones came together to create tiger and magpie paintings, welcoming artists of all experience levels.

With Youngmi’s gentle and thoughtful guidance, minhwa offered us a beautiful way to explore the many ways we connect with Korean culture. As we painted together, we were reminded that culture can be something we inherit, rediscover, share, and create anew. Art can bridge us to our roots, to one another, and to future generations.

Thank you for coming together to celebrate Chuseok last week! 🌕🇰🇷

We are deeply grateful to the 700+ people who joined us in celebrating Korean heritage, culture, and community. This event was more than a celebration—it reminded us of our community’s strength and beauty when we come together.

From Korean adoptees and Korean immigrants to Korean Americans, longtime community members and new friends, families, elders, youth, and everyone in between, thank you for helping create a space where we can connect, share our stories and traditions, and celebrate the many paths that bring us together.

As we gathered beneath the Chuseok moon, we were reminded of the spirit of Ganggangsullae—people joining hands, moving together, and creating something beautiful through connection. May that same spirit continue to bring our community together across generations, experiences, and journeys.

Our community is strengthened by the diversity of our experiences and the connections we share. Together, we are building a more inclusive and connected Korean community—one that honors our roots, embraces every generation and journey, and creates a welcoming place for future generations.

Happy Chuseok!

Chuseok, sometimes compared to the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrated across Korean and East Asia, falls on the full harvest moon and is timed using the lunar calendar. This year, Chuseok is celebrated from September 24-26 with the 25th being the main observation day.

Traditionally, Koreans honor their ancestors by setting a memorial table, called Charye, with photos, mementos, and favorite foods, and by returning to their hometowns and family gravesites.

Did you know?
Chuseok is the busiest travel day of the year in Korea, with hour-long traffic jams as millions head to their hometowns.
Specialty gift sets like premium fruit or Spam are popular presents, sometimes priced at $50 or more.
The Charye table follows a specific arrangement, with placement rules for where certain foods go, such as red foods to the east and white to the west, or fish and meat on opposite sides.
Chuseok cooking and hosting duties have historically fallen on women. In recent years, that norm has been increasingly challenged, with more families sharing the work or simplifying the rituals.

🥁 Project Huson
Project Huson is an initiative to provide education to aspiring JangmiArts students! These four students—Mira Kim, Avery Somdahl, Malachi O'Reilly, and Quinn Beck—are all descendants of Korean Adoptees or are Korean Adoptees themselves who have exhibited passion and leadership in JangmiArts. They are currently working together to teach/assist the youth drumming class this year.

후손 | huson (hu-sohn): meaning descendant, posterity, or future generation. Refers to someone who is an offspring of an ancestor or all future generations of people.

🇰🇷 JangmiArts
JangmiArts is a Korean cultural arts organization based in Minnesota that has been sharing Korean heritage through traditional music, dance, drumming, and arts since 1984. Originally founded as a Korean traditional dance group for Korean Adoptees, JangmiArts has grown into an all-ages community welcoming Korean Adoptees, their families, Korean Americans, and multiracial/multicultural Koreans. Through classes, performances, and cultural programs, JangmiArts creates opportunities for people to learn, experience, and embody Korean cultural heritage together.

Our Chuseok Festival is just 4 days away! We’re beyond excited to introduce our headliner of the night — Conor Lee! ✨

🎸Conor Lee
In an overworked and inundated world, guitarist Conor Lee offers a place to drift, reflect, and escape. Shaped by years as a sideman, Lee draws from a wide palette of alternative rock, jazz, pop, western surf, and chillhop influences. Acting as the accompaniment to the human experience, Lee's music explores nostalgia, soul-searching, and resilience.

Lee’s mission is simple—create instrumental music that is captivating, emotive, and deeply human (and worry about defining the genre later).

His work has been broadcast across the Midwest on Minnesota Public Radio’s The Current, KFAI, Prairie Public Broadcasting, City Cast Twin Cities, and Jazz88. Recently featured in The New York Times for incorporating arrangements of traditional Korean folk music into his performances, Lee continues to expand the boundaries of his sound while deepening his exploration of his Korean heritage.

Conor Lee is releasing his brand-new EP, “Order for Pickup,” this Friday! 🎉 And you won’t want to miss him LIVE with his band at 8:30 PM at AK Connection’s Chuseok Celebration! 🔥

Our Chuseok Festival is just 5 days away! We’re so excited to welcome two more wonderful new vendors to our market: Sejong Academy and Seonbi!

🇰🇷 Sejong Academy
Sejong Academy opened in September, 2014 as a K-6th grade Korean immersion charter school. It has expanded and now serves Pre-K through 12th grade. Sejong Academy is committed to providing an academically rigorous education to Twin Cities students through an immersion experience in Korean language and culture by using research-based curricula, high standards for accountability, and promoting an appreciation for diversity and international cultures.

🥮 Seonbi
Seonbi Korean Dessert is a Minnesota-based, small-batch brand created to share the beauty of Korean food traditions through handcrafted sweets. At the heart of Seonbi is yakgwa, a Korean honey pastry known for its rich flavor and signature chewy texture. Alongside their original yakgwa, they create modern interpretations such as Cacao Eclipse, featuring dark chocolate, and Midnight Bloom, made with black sesame, a smooth vanilla white chocolate center, and a delicate touch of edible gold. Seonbi also offers apple jeonggwa, a traditional Korean candied fruit. Each piece is prepared by hand with patience, care, and close attention to detail. Through Seonbi, they hope to honor the craftsmanship and stories behind Korean sweets while allowing their flavors to unfold in new ways.

💛 TokkiTalk
TokkiTalk creates spaces designed to connect Minnesotans with Korean language and culture. Tokki means “rabbit” in Korean, and many see the Korean peninsula as shaped like one! The goal of their classes and events is to spark more “tokkitalk”: the practice of the Korean language and conversation about Korean culture. Whether you are looking to connect with your roots, understand your favorite shows and music better, or learn about a new culture, TokkiTalk is here for you!

🥬 Sunmi Kimchi
Home-style small-batch kimchi rooted in family tradition, made with love, and shared through food. Made by hand with no shortcuts, produced in Minnesota by Hyeonju and her husband, Ryan. They offer a variety of kimchi products, including classic napa cabbage kimchi in spicy and regular, daikon (kkakdugi) radish, and cucumber kimchi.
