Youth Farm

Youth Farm Youth Farm. Where Leadership Grows. We farm to grow. We farm to play. We farm to give. We harvest relationships alongside peapods. We sow confidence with carrots.

We nurture leaders like the seeds we plant. We gather peppers along with knowledge. We tend to cabbage and in turn the community. We work the land and let it transform us. We farm to learn. We farm to feed. Where leadership grows.

A message from the Youth Farm Board of Directors:

After much thought and careful consideration, we are saddened to share that Youth Farm has made the difficult decision to dissolve the organization due to ongoing financial challenges. Despite our best efforts to secure new funding, the uncertainty around grants and federal support has left us in a position where we can no longer continue operations.

This decision, made by our board last week, ensures we can wind down in a respectful and orderly manner. We are committed to fulfilling the remainder of our programming this week and working closely with our staff for a smooth transition. To our supporters, partners, and the communities we’ve served: Thank you. We are so proud of all the good work the organization has accomplished over 30 years and are deeply grateful to the youth, partners, and community members who have been an integral part of this history.

We will offer additional updates as we move through this transition, but please reach out if you have questions or thoughts.

With deep gratitude,
The Youth Farm Board of Directors

Our St. Paul after school cooking class has been a blast! From warm & cozy grilled cheese with tomato soup to a full-on seafood boil, youth are learning, cooking, and eating amazing recipes from their backyard and around the world.

Check out these pics of the seafood boil (made with live blue crab!), and delicious chicken chicharrón & cheese pupusas, topped off with curtido and homemade salsa.

Yum!

This fall, in the Northside cooking class (What You Got Cookin'?) students have been developing and cooking recipes centered around the prompt 'save the word 'savory.'' One of these dishes was a delicious red curry & dumpling soup with greens!

But what about dessert - can a dessert be savory, too? The youth had an idea to use a savory element in haromy with the sweet - so, they cored apples and stuffed them with a yummy mixture of savory feta, pears, honey, and blackberries. This innovative treat was a hit with all the youth... AND the parents and school staff, who shared in the finished product and just couldn't get enough!

This year, local artist and friend of Youth Farm Rubylith Art worked with the St. Paul team to deck out the shed at the Main Farm in a gorgeous custom mural!

With input from the youth and Youth Farm staff, Ruby designed, then led the St. Paul Project LEAD and Farm Stewards through the process of painting the mural.

As the painting commenced, Ruby worked with the youth to incorporate some changes to the design - such as the handprints in the butterfly's wings. Take a look at the stunning finished product, and be sure to check out more of Rubylith's work at rubylith-art.com/home

“Everyone contributes something to the table - we learn, but we also teach at the same time.” - Jesus, Program Manager

Today is Give To The Max Day (GTMD) - and we have one last update from the ground to share with you. This summer, St. Paul Farm Steward Law interviewed her coworkers about Youth Farm - what we do, what there is to learn, and personal take-aways from their experiences. We’re called Youth Farm, but an important part of our work is building a network of trusted adults to support our youth. From program managers like Jesus, to community partners, to school staff, to volunteers - each member of our community takes the lead from our youth, while keeping their needs at the forefront. We lead by example - demonstrating that we all have something to learn from one another, no matter our age.

You can do your part in supporting these young leaders by donating to our GTMD campaign - your donations directly support young leaders as they grow, cook and share food in their community, build skills and relationships, and thrive. This year, your donation will be doubled - we received a generous match of up to $5,000! Head to https://www.givemn.org/organization/Youthfarmmn to show your support today!

TODAY is Give To The Max Day - Minnesota’s annual celebration of generosity and all of the ways nonprofits and schools improve our lives. What started as a one-time fundraising campaign in 2009 has grown into an annual giving holiday, raising more than $330 million for Minnesota-based organizations to-date!

This GTMD, we are asking you to support youth leaders as they grow, cook and share food in their community, build skills and relationships, and thrive. Please, consider donating to Youth Farm this GTMD - head to https://www.givemn.org/organization/Youthfarmmn to show your support today!

TOMORROW is Give to the Max Day - Minnesota’s state-wide day of giving! Your donations directly support young leaders as they grow, cook and share food in their community, build skills and relationships, and thrive.

This summer, Youth Farm participated in the Nellie Stone Johnson Freedom School - a model where youth are empowered to excel and believe in their ability to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, country, and world with hope, education and action. Freedom Schools programs like ours empower youth to believe in their ability and responsibility to make a difference while instilling in them a love of reading to help them avoid summer learning loss.

You can support this vital work by donating to Youth Farm's GTMD campaign. Early giving has already started and this year, your donation will be doubled - we received a generous match of up to $5,000! Head to https://www.givemn.org/organization/Youthfarmmn to show your support today!

“Youth Farm is a place where I can be myself, it's not a place where I have to try my best - I mean, Youth Farm is a place where you should give your best effort - but it's not a place where perfection is needed.” - Ei Meh, Project LEAD

As we approach Give To The Max Day (GTMD) we’re sharing updates from the ground - Farm Steward Law interviewed her coworkers about Youth Farm, what they do, what they learn, the ups and downs of the work.

Unlearning perfectionism is something that many of us struggle with - it is a product of white supremacist values that work to hold us back from showing up as our full selves. The truth is, no one is perfect… but, it's important that we each put in our best effort to make meaningful change in our lives and in the lives of those around us!

You can make a difference this GTMD by supporting our campaign - your donations directly support young leaders as they grow, cook and share food in their community, build skills and relationships, and thrive. Early giving has already started and this year, your donation will be doubled - we received a generous match of up to $5,000! Additionally, if you donate anytime before November 21st, Youth Farm could win an Early Giving Golden Ticket (that's an extra $500 added to your donation!). Head to https://www.givemn.org/organization/Youthfarmmn to show your support today!

“[I joined Youth Farm becuase] I want to experience new things, I want to learn new things - I heard it's a job where they’ll help you advance your leadership skills!” - Kler, Project LEAD

As we approach Give To The Max Day (GTMD) we’re sharing updates from the ground - Farm Steward Law interviewed her coworkers about Youth Farm, what they do, what they learn, the ups and downs of the work.

Do you remember your first job? Early work experiences are formative - and at Youth Farm, we don’t just provide programming for young people, we offer employment opportunities for teen and young adult program participants. These aren’t just jobs - they’re chances to experience new things, and to build unique skills and relationships with peers and community members that can last a lifetime.

You can make this type of work experience possible by donating to our GTMD campaign - your donations directly support young leaders as they grow, cook and share food in their community, build skills and relationships, and thrive.
