Our goal is to help researchers develop safer, more effective treatment options for cancers where survival rates remain low or haven’t improved in decades. We provide research funding in the early stages of research and fill in gaps along the way, when funding from federal or other sources just isn’t available. What does it mean to survive survival?

For Cole, diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma at age 11, the hardest part of his journey came after treatment.

Now 19, he’s building a future in the culinary world - but getting here meant navigating mental health struggles that his family never expected.

“It was easier to find community during chemo,” his mom, Kelly, shared. “But when your kid starts acting out and other parents don’t want to be around that, they pull away, and you’re left really isolated.”

This World Mental Health Day, we're taking a deeper look at life after cancer. Thank you to Cole and Kelly for sharing their thoughts with us.

Treat yourself to doing some good for kids like Kara. 🎃🧙👩‍🎤🍬

Kara was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma the day before Halloween in 2023, after going to the doctor because she wasn’t feeling well. An X-ray revealed a tumor the size of a cantaloupe that had displaced her heart.

She was so sad to miss trick-or-treating so her nurses made sure Halloween still came to her, helping her pick out a costume and bringing her candy.

The following year, Kara and her family started a costume drive with her school and donated the costumes to the hospital. Since then, she’s held a lemonade stand and organized other fundraisers to help kids like her.

And when the hard days come, Kara has a way of moving forward: “I’m done feeling crummy.” Sometimes that means a pizza party with her nurses. 💛

An idea from years ago is becoming a new treatment for children with aggressive brain tumors.

With support from our donors, Dr. Chris Moertel and Dr. Michael Olin began developing a vaccine at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. That research led to the discovery of CD200 and the development of a new drug.

With continued CCRF support, that work has moved from the lab into a Phase 1 clinical trial at Children's Minnesota.

And now, researchers are planning the next phase.

Breakthrough research takes time. But as Dr. Moertel says, there’s something amazing about seeing years of research become a treatment that can benefit kids.

We agree. That’s what progress looks like.
