The Competitive Gaming badge opens the door for Scouts to explore one of the fastest-growing industries in the world, esports and modern gaming.
This badge goes beyond just playing games. It teaches Scouts how to apply the values of the Scout Oath and Law in digital spaces while building skills like teamwork, communication, and responsible online behavior.
It’s also part of Scouting America’s Test Lab program, meaning it’s being piloted to gather feedback, refine the experience, and ensure it delivers real value if it is launched as a merit badge.
And the skills Scouts build here aren’t just for gaming, they translate directly into real careers. The FAA is currently recruiting video gamers to serve as air traffic controllers, highlighting that skills such as quick decision-making, focus under pressure, and the ability to manage complex situations are in high demand. Training starts around $22 an hour, with experienced controllers earning up to $177,000 in their first year.
Blending fun with real-world application, this badge helps Scouts explore career paths, understand modern gaming culture, and grow into confident, responsible digital citizens.
