Volunteer drivers are a lifeline for older adults across the U.P., and being prepared for the unexpected matters when you're on the road. Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly Upper Michigan Chapter is equipping volunteer vehicles with emergency preparedness gear to keep drivers and elders safe across five U.P. counties.

Healthcare professionals working with older adults have a new opportunity this fall.

Upper Peninsula Health Care Solutions is hosting a six-session Project ECHO series on cognitive and behavioral change in aging, running Thursdays, September 17 through December 3. Topics include anxiety and depression in older patients, competency and consent, and dementia care, with free CME and CEU credit available.

For Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal elders, mobility equipment enables attendance at pow wows, community events, and cultural gatherings that support health and well-being. KBIC is expanding its equipment loan closet at the Senior Center to provide motorized and lightweight transport equipment for Tribal elders in Baraga County.

Fresh food should be within reach no matter where you live in the U.P. Superior Health Foundation joined Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, United Dairy Industry of Michigan, and Blue Cross Complete of Michigan in a $250,000 statewide investment to help 50 food pantries expand access to fresh food.

"This funding helps U.P. residents who rely on food pantries get the nutrition they need, along with more choice in the foods available to them," said Megan Murphy, SHF CEO.

For Baraga County families facing a cancer diagnosis, support looks like more than medical care. The Baraga County Cancer Support Group, Inc. provides travel assistance, emotional support, and educational materials for cancer patients, survivors, and anyone impacted by cancer.

When children disclose abuse, they should not have to repeat their story to multiple agencies. The Northern Lights Child Advocacy Center, operated under the The Women's Center, brings law enforcement, prosecutors, medical providers, and counselors together for a coordinated, child-centered response in Marquette County.
