Applications for the 2025 Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Summer Camp program are officially open, and we are eager to share a wonderful opportunity with your students who may be interested in volunteering as counselors. MDA Summer Camp provides kids ages 8-17 diagnosed with neuromuscular diseases the chance to experience a life-changing week filled with fun, adventure, and friendship—all at no cost to their families. This camp enables kids to just be kids in an environment where they can connect with others facing similar challenges.

MDA Summer Camp is made possible by volunteer counselors who provide essential support to campers as they participate in adaptive camp experiences, games, dances, mealtimes and more. In addition to bringing joy to campers, this fantastic opportunity allows students to gain valuable field-based experience in medical professions, education, recreation, and social sciences. Counselors can earn over 140 hours of volunteer service while gaining meaningful, real-world experience. Check out this short video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3z8d-FaZMRA) or head to MDA.org (https://www.mda.org/summer-camp/volunteer) to learn about Summer Camp’s impact on MDA families and volunteers.

While Volunteers are welcome to apply to any MDA Summer Camp session across the nation, the session nearest in location to Northern Michigan University is:

MDA Summer Camp at Camp Cavell
Lexington, MI
Saturday, June 21 - Friday, June 27

Big Brothers Big Sisters has a variety of volunteer opportunities available for the 2024-2025 school year. Please see below for all the details on the various programs.

🌟SITE/SCHOOL-BASED MENTORING
In the Site/School-Based Program, matches meet at a designated location - like a school, workplace, community center, or other site - and a BBBS staff member is present at all meetings and observing match interactions. Volunteer mentors (Bigs) are matched one-on-one with an elementary or middle school student (Littles). BBBS staff plan the activities matches do together each week. Bigs will meet with their Littles after school and meet in the library, gym, or other designated space. These programs take place weekly for about one hour, occurring on the same day each week (For example, every Tuesday from 3-4 pm). This schedule follows the academic school calendar.

Bothwell Middle School (Grades 6th - 8th) will meet on Tuesdays from 3-4 pm
Lake Superior Village (Girls ages 8-11) will meet on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30 pm
Lake Superior Village (Girls ages 12+) will meet on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 pm
LGBTQ+ Youth Mentoring Program (Various Locations) meets every other Tuesday between 3-5 pm

Possible Civic Engagement Opportunity

As Michigan takes center stage on the political landscape for the upcoming elections, students in Michigan have an opportunity to make their voices heard and take leadership on their campuses. For Michigan provides a platform for students to be civic leaders in their community through voter registration, education, and turnout by building a scrappy and innovative operation to protect and expand democracy. Help create the future you want to see by getting involved with For Michigan! Volunteers receive training and education from campus organizers to learn about community organizing and connect with nonprofit and campaign professionals.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

Talk to students: Engage with students through door-knocking, high-traffic canvassing, relational outreach, and more.
Build relationships: Collaborate with a coalition of administrators, student leaders, and student organizations on campus.
Use social media: Engage with students and organize on campus through social media platforms.
Work Tabling Shifts/Events: Man the For Michigan table at big events and during daily canvassing and providing students with information about voting and encouraging them to make a pledge to vote. To apply, fill out a short form (https://www.mobilize.us/4mich/event/671744/?referring_vol=6408662&share_context=dashboard-event-details&sharer_role=SharerRole.ORGANIZER).
