Marquette County has lost 20,000 acres of coastal Lake Superior wetlands. Located off of County Road 550 in Marquette Township, Eagles Nest Nature Preserve & Community Forest offers a truly unique look at these threatened ecosystems.

Managed by the Superior Watershed Partnership, ENCF protects 17 acres of old growth forest, forested swamps, marshes, and coastal wetlands in pristine condition. Citizens for Superior was proud to help build a boardwalk through the preserve to improve public access to the preserve and Lake Superior in 2023. The trail is a perfect length for an easy stroll, and you are likely to see a menagerie of wildlife and diverse flora.

Coastal wetlands are the last line of defense in keeping Lake Superior clean and healthy. Let's protect them.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our “Unplugged” rendition of Superior on Tap last week! We’d like to especially thank Discover Big Bay, Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve, Superior Watershed Partnership, and UP Land Conservancy for participating.

We had a great time talking with Big Bay and Powell Township residents about conservation, watershed protection, recreation, and stewardship. This is a special community that cares about its land, water, and way of life. It’s so important to have spaces for grassroots discussion and community input, and we’ll be building on these conversations in the coming months!

Volunteer opportunity and v**e reycling announcement!

To ensure v**e recycling in Marquette County has a long-term and sustainable future, Superior Watershed Partnership will implement our v**e recycling program as a permanent part of SWP's successful electronic waste recycling efforts.

Join us and our friends at SWP to Tape the Vapes and celebrate this important milestone next Tuesday, May 12th at 6:30pm! We'll meet in the Peter White Public Library conference room -- supplies and snacks provided.

We’re still looking for volunteers to help us clean up County Road 550! Plus, you can enjoy a potluck lunch in Big Bay afterwards!

Whether it's a beach day at Little Presque or a getaway in Big Bay, we've all driven County Road 550. Now, it's time to give back to this important corridor that connects our communities. Join Citizens for Superior in taking part in Powell Township's annual Dash for Trash on Saturday, May 9th!

We're looking for volunteers to help us "adopt" and clean up a section of 550, and then enjoy a community potluck lunch in Big Bay afterwards. We'll also be collecting disposable v**es for recycling at the Powell Township Hall!

We know you've missed Superior on Tap! Luckily, the wait is over. Join Citizens for Superior and the Laughing Whitefish Bird Alliance for Intro to Birding: Basics & Beyond on Thursday, May 14th at 7pm at Ore Dock Brewing Co.!

In this program, Matt Betts will go over some fundamentals of birdwatching, including tips for using binoculars, field guides, and other resources. He'll cover the basics of field identification and taxonomy, some history of bird conservation, and how birding can be a positive force for both people and birds.

Matt Betts is a Marquette-based artist and avid birder who serves on the board of the Laughing Whitefish Bird Alliance. He is also a board member and occasional host at Moosewood Nature Center on Presque Isle. His free time is mostly spent walking trails and driving back roads in search of wild birds to photograph and paint.

Get paid $1,500 to protect your wetlands!

Yes, that's right! CSCLS' Wetland Protection Cash Incentive program offers financial assistance to Marquette County landowners seeking to permanently protect wetlands on their property through a conservation easement. Thanks to generous donors, we are happy to announce that we are increasing the cash incentive to $1,500!

To be eligible for the program, your property must be entirely located in Marquette County and have wetlands present. Does this sound like you? Visit citizensforsuperior.org/wpci to learn more and fill out an interest form.

Marquette County has lost over 50,000 acres of wetlands over time; by having a conservation easement on your property, you are helping protect land, water, and wildlife!

Enjoy this Monday's mindfulness moment, brought to you by the tranquility of the Wilson Creek! Lake Superior depends on countless coldwater tributaries, including Wilson Creek, that meander through Marquette County's wilderness before feeding the big lake. Take some time to appreciate the clear, clean, and cold waters around us 💧
