This Saturday, October 17th, SWP, in partnership with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC), will be hosting an electronic waste collection event at the Ojibwa Casino (105 Acre Trail, Marquette, MI 49855)!

Join us tomorrow (September 11th) at South Beach to see the latest in beach cleanup technology in action.

This summer, we’ve deployed solar-powered Beach BeBot technology, which helps remove debris from beaches. All waste collected is characterized and data is shared with the Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup, an initiative powered by the Council of the Great Lakes Region and Pollution Probe.

These beach cleanups are open to the public and no equipment is required–we’ll provide everything you need!

Where: Meet at South Beach
When: Begins at 10:00am

This year, the Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) and Great Lakes Climate Corps (GLCC) continued their long-standing partnership with the Hiawatha National Forest to improve pollinator habitat at Peninsula Point on the Stonington Peninsula. The site is one of the most important monarch butterfly migration stopover areas in the Great Lakes, where thousands of monarchs congregate each fall before making their crossing of Lake Michigan.

GLCC crews returned to Peninsula Point this year to help maintain and restore native pollinator habitat, building on restoration work that has taken place there for many years. This partnership has included removing invasive species and establishing native plants, including milkweed, that provide nectar and breeding habitat for monarchs, bees and other pollinators. The SWP and Hiawatha National Forest have planted thousands of native seedlings at targeted habitat openings as part of the ongoing restoration effort.

The work at Peninsula Point is a good example of how the GLCC provides practical, on-the-ground conservation capacity to federal land management partners. By combining Hiawatha National Forest expertise and long-term site stewardship with GLCC crews and SWP resources, important native habitat has steadily improved and expanded at this significant site for monarch conservation.

After crossing Lake Michigan, these monarchs continue south through the Midwest and central United States on one of the longest migrations in the insect world. The eastern monarch population can travel up to 3,000 miles from northern breeding areas to the high-elevation oyamel fir forests of central Mexico, where they spend the winter before beginning the return journey north in the spring. Remarkably, the monarchs that make this fall migration have never made the journey before, yet they navigate thousands of miles to reach the same wintering grounds used by generations before them.

This summer, we launched our newest tool for keeping our water clean–check out our PixieDrone machine! 🌟

As part of our work to support the Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup, an initiative powered by the Council of the Great Lakes Region and Pollution Probe, we’re integrating clean tech like this PixieDrone machine to support our efforts to keep Lake Superior clean.

PixieDrone is a floating, remote-controlled mobile waste collector designed to remove floating debris from the water. It can collect many types of waste, including organic material, plastic, glass, metal, paper, and rubber, with a collection capacity of up to 160 liters. As the PixieDrone moves across the water, it captures and holds floating debris while allowing the water to pass through and return to its source. 🗑️

Through the generous funding and support by midwest retailer, Meijer toward the PixieDrone machine, we have the opportunity to use impactful technology to keep our water clean and clear of debris. 💙

We’re on our way to reaching our goal of planting 100K trees in Marquette– and there’s still time for you to help us reach our goal! 🌲

Among the many projects of our GLCC and GLTCC teams, our crews have been busy planting native trees across Marquette County to help enhance coastal habitats near Lake Superior and our local ecosystems. We’re making great progress toward the 100,000 mark, and you can help us get there!

Whether you’re a local municipality, organization or landowner, you can request trees at no cost to you (plant your own trees or the GLCC can help you plant trees for orders over 100).
make a request to have trees planted on your land at no cost to you. Simply complete the request form below with your desired location for planting, number of trees, and if you’d like assistance from our GLCC and GLTCC crews for planting.

Make a request by completing this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScCJk9-wVGAdMCi0QoeHnweSK5kkzEayLJXT0el4d2x2mtIFg/viewform
