Our collective creativity cups are FULL ☕️ after another stellar Art Walk at Chocolay Bayou Nature Preserve. 🌱

On Saturday, we hosted eight incredible artists selling their wares along the wooded trails of the Bayou. There were block prints, ceramics, tarot cards, photographs, letterpress works, typewriter poems, paintings, and more.

Thank you to the talented artists, the volunteers who helped make it happen, and all who attended!

We're thankful to be part of this exciting collaboration at Vielmetti-Peters Reserve! Long-term avian monitoring helps us learn about both the health of bird populations and the ecosystem as a whole. Because birds are sensitive to changes in their environment, population shifts can signal broader ecological challenges. We're looking forward to learning more about our local bird populations alongside researchers and students to inform UPLC's conservation efforts.

Thank you to fan favorite THE UNION SUITS 🎶 and everyone who came out to enjoy food, fellowship, and Music on the McClure last Saturday. UPLC is honored to own and manage the adjacent Dead River Community Forest “Bridges parcel” thanks to a generous donation from the McClure Basin Association. Feeling the neighborly love!

❇️ COOL new exhibit at the UPLC office! ❇️

As part of their Museum Studies final project, NMU students Dori Jurasin, Alexis Hall, Jules Dupey, and Abby Deringer (under the guidance of Dr. Scott Demel) recently compiled a fascinating exhibit with a number of artifacts from archeological digs conducted at the Chocolay Bayou Preserve by NMU’s Archeology Department. The exhibit is currently on display at UPLC’s office and includes items such as a clay pipe from the 1880s, a 100 year old leather belt, and remnant bottles from an old cabin site. The Bayou has many stories to tell - notably, its location along the boundary of the 1836 Treaty of Washington and 1842 Treaty of La Pointe where Anishinaabe ceded land to the US Government but retained the rights to hunt, fish and gather in these ceded territories. Thank you to the students who put together this display sharing some of the stories of the Bayou’s past through objects!
