Our Member Monday of the week is Jenna Hartom! 👏♥️
When did you start attending the Hiawatha Music Festival or other Hiawatha events?
My father attended the earliest gatherings in Deerton prior to the first festival and is a lifetime HMC member. My mother was pregnant with me in 1982 when she attended the festival, and as a family we went throughout the 80’s and 90’s. Following my mother’s death, my father and I continued to attend annually, and it became a place for reunion and “homecoming” for me throughout my life. The only festival I have missed in the past 25 years was the last one because of my son’s birth.
Why did you become a Member?
I became a member as a young adult after moving to NYC and starting my career as an art therapist. I thought more about how to support organizations that are meaningful to me through membership and volunteer work. I began to volunteer at the festival and found that I loved set-up because it involved physical activity and coordination across various areas. I also had the opportunity to serve on the board of directors where I learned more about why membership is vital to sustain the co-op for years to come.
What makes Hiawatha Music Co-Op so special to you?
The extraordinary people who give their time, expertise and resources throughout the year. I am inspired by the many original members who continue to be active and engaged at every level, and I feel privileged to have gotten to know and learn from them. It is incredible to see that each contribution is meaningful, and we are creating a legacy in real time.
What is your favorite Hiawatha Memory?
I have very early childhood memories at the festival: Playing in our pup tent near the park office, falling asleep during the last act at the mainstage, making instruments and following along in the children’s parade. More recently I loved watching my then 5-month-old listening to Hearth & Hymn in the children’s area. Their album, Lullaby Bangers, became her favorite for the next year. I’m looking forward to making more memories this year when we celebrate my son’s first birthday at our campsite!
Thank you for cherishing Hiawatha, Jenna!
