L311 has many committees that allow members to be more engaged in the daily operations of our work. Many include opportunities to work with management side by side when making decisions. One of them is the apparatus committee. Last week members of this committee had an opportunity to see the outcome of their work by heading up to Appleton to do a final inspection of a soon to be delivered Ladder truck for Madison Fire.

During the final inspection the committee works through the order list, item by item, carefully reviewing every detail. Thanks to Reliant Fire Apparatus for the photos.

Last week members from Madison’s Heavy Urban Rescue Team were called to assist Stoughton Fire & EMS with a technical rescue.

A person fell down a 10-15 foot cliff, falling through brush and landing on a rocky beach. This created difficult access issues to care for the victim. Members from Madison’s HURT team were called to assist Stoughton Fire & EMS, along with McFarland Fire and EMS. Crews worked together in efforts to assist in the rescue. Ropes, ground ladders, and water craft were used for this response.

October 17th is our annual Fire Fighters vs Police soccer game at Breese Stevens Field. Come out to support and have a good time. The event supports CampHERO.

Unique layout to this Rimrock Rd accident on Friday. Our Fitchburg members responded and found some stabilizing/safety concerns. Fortunately no injuries.

Last week some of our L311 members took part in a rope rescue technician course. The Madison Fire Department hosted its first-ever 40-hour CMC Rope Rescue Technician I/II. 10 members of Madison’s Heavy Urban Rescue Team trained all week at various sites across the city like MATC, MG&E, and Camp Randall. It culminated in scenario-based exercises at the Kohl Center.

Members of other departments also took part in the training. They were from Beloit, Cottage Grove, Stoughton, Verona, and the SAFER Fire District. Thank you to CMC instructors LeRoy Harbach and Mark Rickbeil.

This past week 3 members of Fire Fighters Local 311 attended the Women in Fire International Conference 2026 in Austin, TX. The conference brought together women from all over the country to train, network, and grow professionally.

Women in Fire is an organization dedicated to championing female leadership and participation within fire and emergency services.

Attendees participated in HOT classes consisting of IAFF fire ground survival, vertical ventilation and nozzle forward. Workshops included topics surrounding aggressive fire tactics, physiology and wellness, mental health and leadership.
