Our members throughout L311 strive to be part of the community. Yesterday members on Madison's Engine 1, Engine 3, and Engine 4 were able to make a stop at the old "Park Street Shoe Repair Shop" on its final day. Even though the actual repair shop closed a few years back, it was well known as a meeting place for many locals throughout the years. Once a bustling shoe shop in Madison's Italian Greenbush neighborhood, it became a place just to share stories, coffee, and solve the world's problems. Owner George Fabian has decided to close it for good.

Engine 1 found some history while stopping by. The repair shop was home to some old classic photos of former hockey players, including former Badger Hockey Goalie Michael Dibble, who would go on to work for Madison Fire for many years. Retiring as Chief Dibble just a few years ago.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the Sept 11th attacks. Looking for a way to give back? Take part in this year's Never Forget Blood Drive. Last year 121 people donated. We'd love to beat that this year. Hope to see you there.

L311 was grateful to recieve the Employer Recognition Award for "Most Diverse Player". Since the early 2000s, L311 has looked to support Community Work Services whos mission it is to employee those in our area with diverse abilities. The opportunties created by supporting this program have lead to many meaningful ways for clients to have positive work and engagment opportunies in our community. Congrats to our members throughout L311 and those at Fire Stations 1, 4, 8, 9, and 13 for being recognized for there commitment in working with our community participants.

This program was started in the late 1990s. During the early 2000s funds for the program were going to be cut. L311, with the support of MFD administration, looked to keep this amazing program going and has been funding it since. Job well done by all of those who worked to keep this partnership going.

At the IAFF Convention in Arlington, TX, in front of more than 2,000 fire fighters and labor leaders from all over North America and Canada, our own Local 311 Vice President Kevin Sherry, was recognized with the 2026 IAFF Local Leadership Award.

Sherry has helped secure competitive pay, strong benefits, and safety standards that protect members on the job. His command of labor law and department policy has made him an invaluable voice at the bargaining table and within the Local. His leadership is also deeply personal. Sherry has stood beside members during some of their most difficult professional and personal moments and mentored generations of Local 311 leaders.

Kevin is not only a great labor leader and fire fighter here in Madison, he is been an advocate for our members for 25 years. Kevin Sherry is the longest standing principal officer in the state of Wisconsin, which is a true testament to the hard work he has put in to represent our members. Congrats to being selected for the 2026 IAFF Local Leadership Award.

Members of L311 are in Arlington, Texas this week, joining thousands of fire fighters from all over North America at the International Association of Fire Fighters’ convention, where we are conducting the business of the IAFF for the next 2 years.

These events are a great chance for our members to talk to fire fighters from all over the U.S. and Canada about what issues their fire fighters are facing, what has worked, what hasn’t, and how we can make a dangerous job safer and better for the members and citizens we serve!

Fifteen years ago, it was just an idea. Today, thanks to a dedicated group of visionary women, CampHERO is an empowering reality for local girls. Camp Hero's mission is to help girls develop courage, gain confidence, and build character by introducing them to protective services. Through hands-on activities led by active Police Officers, Firefighters, and EMT/Paramedics, girls get to explore their potential and discover their strengths.

Shout out to the many L311 members, present, and future who have helped build this experience for our local youth.

CampHERO is open to all girls from kindergarten through 12th grade. Learn more at https://camphero4girls.org/
