Line 5: The State of Michigan is now taking public comments on a key water discharge permit for Enbridge’s proposed Line 5 oil tunnel through the Straits of Mackinac. Enbridge is asking permission to cause irreparable damage to Lake Michigan, one of the world's most ecologically sensitive and important freshwater passages. Write a comment to oppose these permits! https://act.sierraclub.org/actions/Michigan?actionId=AR0620227
Enbridge is continuing with construction of the Line 5 reroute while a judge considers whether state permits for the project were appropriately granted. On-the-ground monitoring is happening to track what Enbridge is doing, and you can read about some of the observations here. https://www.sierraclub.org/wisconsin/blog/2026/06/line-5-oil-pipeline-threatens-wisconsin-what-it-looks

Long before it became a federal holiday, Juneteenth lived in Black memory, Black prayer, Black churches, Black parks, Black family reunions, and Black joy. It is more than a celebration of emancipation—it is a demand that we tell the truth about who built this country, who continues to shape it, and why protecting Black freedom strengthens democracy for everyone.

Environmental justice is not separate from democracy. Communities cannot protect their air, water, land, or health if they are denied political power, stripped of historical truth, or pushed out of public decision-making. That is why Juneteenth belongs in environmental work. Because freedom has a geography. It lives in our lungs, our water, our neighborhoods, our stories, and our shared future.

Truth matters. Help us spread it. Wishing you a happy and meaningful .

In a recent gubernatorial forum, seven candidates, when asked about Line 5, said that tribal sovereignty and the protection of the local environment and the Great Lakes were paramount. Several expressed misgivings that the interests of the Wisconsin public appear to be losing out to those of a Canadian corporation.

My hope is that these words do not remain abstract slogans, but are put into practice through concrete and specific policy changes."

Dear Editor: In the six years that I have been following the protracted legal battles surrounding the Line 5 reroute, I’ve observed that the current systems of regulation and departmental
