Friends of the Children-Boston We select children who face multiple systemic obstacles. We amplify their voices as they write their own stories of hope and resilience.

Enter their lives early, provide them with a dedicated, caring adult and stay by their side, no matter what. Our model is distinct, courageous and proven. We have redefined the youth mentoring field by creating the first and only long-term professional mentoring program in the country. Our Friends are experts in building sustained and nurturing relationships with youth. We specialize in working with youth who have faced a lot of adversity. We have the data to show that it's real and it works. Our model was founded on research showing that the single most important factor in overcoming childhood adversity is a long-term, nurturing relationship with a consistent and caring adult. Research over the past three decades continues to affirm how much these relationships matter.

Every winter we make sure each of our Achievers, and their brothers and sisters, has a new coat of their own before the cold really hits. This year that’s 340 coats, from baby sizes all the way up to young adult. The teen sizes, ages 12 to 18, are always the hardest ones for us to fill. If you’d like to help, you can pick one from our registry, and it ships right to us, so there’s nothing to drop off. We’re collecting through November 11!

Same two Achievers, one year apart. Watching our Achievers grow up together, with their Friends (professional mentors) along for the ride, never gets old!

Friends of the Children — Boston’s second annual Trunk or Treat was a blast! Achievers, caregivers, and siblings came out for the event, and once again we invited our board members and their families to join in, along with some of our donors and volunteers. It’s a chance for everyone to get to know Achievers and their Friends (mentors), and those connections keep growing. For years now, our board members have brought their own families to Friends events, and some of their children have even become real friends with our Achievers along the way.

Thank you to everyone who showed up for our Achievers and their families. Tell us: What are you dressing up as this year?

Every year, volunteers from State Street spend a day at Friends of the Children — Boston playing games with our Achievers. We call it Day of Joy, and it’s one of the days Achievers look forward to most, because they know they’re going to get to take on the grown-ups. Over the years that has meant Legos, Uno, Connect 4, and plenty of co****le. This year, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, State Street brought dominoes, and the day turned into a full domino tournament.

State Street has been our partner since 2010, and this spring they received our Power of One Award. Thank you to every volunteer who keeps coming back to sit across the table from an Achiever who fully intends to win!

Cheer competition day, with flowers afterward from a Friend who made the drive to watch!

Over the years, our friends (professional mentors) end up in the stands for a lot of things. This week it was a cheer competition. Nobody asked her to be there, but her showing up made all the difference. That’s the whole point.

Some things look a lot easier from the ground.

Trying something new means working out where to start, what to do when you get stuck, and whether you are willing to keep going anyway. Achievers get to find all of that out here, with somebody at the bottom who is not going anywhere.

Your support makes more of these possible at friendsboston.org/donate

Ten minutes on the playground and a Friend (professional mentor) who is in no rush to leave. That is a lot of what one-to-one time actually looks like, and the foundation that builds trust for years to come.

She created this herself, then found the most comfortable seat in the building to show it off from. Achievers here get room to make things and people who genuinely want to see them. A creation somebody actually looks at is worth ten that stay in the notebook.

Your support gives more Boston Achievers that room at friendsboston.org/donate
