Jamaica Plain Historical Society

Jamaica Plain Historical Society The Jamaica Plain Historical Society sponsors occasional lectures and a regular weekly series of walking tours during the summer.

We welcome contributions of photographs and historic essays about Jamaica Plain for use on our web site. The Jamaica Plain Historical Society was founded in 1987 to highlight the rich and varied history of this neighborhood of Boston. During the non-summer months the JPHS sponsors a monthly event, usually in the form of a book talk, lecture, film-screening, etc. From mid-May to the end of Septembe

r a weekly walking tour of some area of the neighborhood is offered. All JPHS activities are free and open to the public. With the exception of an annual members event which is a chance to celebrate the members of the JP Historical Society who make all the activities possible. Our website (www.jphs.org) is the main outlet for the JPHS and is an excellent and comprehensive source of information about the history of Jamaica Plain.

On June 18, 1867 Father Patrick O'Bierne puchased land on South Street from Abner Child adjacent to his house at 65 South Street. He was pastor of St. Joseph's in Roxbury and had been appointed to find a place in JP for a new Catholic church. It would become St Thomas Aquinas.

Happy Flag Day! 🇺🇸 On June 14, 1909 the Firemen's Memorial in Forest Hills Cemetery was dedicated in a ceremony presided over by Mayor Honey Fitz. It features a larger-than-life firefighter sculpted by Roxbury's own John Wilson and bronze plaques on each side of the pedestal. https://www.jphs.org/victorian-era/firemens-memorial-at-forest-hills.html

Our friends at Walking City Trails just unveiled their newest trail: Boston Boundless. It doesn't go through JP since it traces the edge of the City but it is definitely historic! https://ow.ly/4tN650Z8vm9
