Jamaica Plain Historical Society

The Jamaica Plain Historical Society sponsors occasional lectures and a regular weekly series of walking tours during the summer.

We welcome contributions of photographs and historic essays about Jamaica Plain for use on our web site. The Jamaica Plain Historical Society was founded in 1987 to highlight the rich and varied history of this neighborhood of Boston. During the non-summer months the JPHS sponsors a monthly event, usually in the form of a book talk, lecture, film-screening, etc. From mid-May to the end of Septembe

r a weekly walking tour of some area of the neighborhood is offered. All JPHS activities are free and open to the public. With the exception of an annual members event which is a chance to celebrate the members of the JP Historical Society who make all the activities possible. Our website (www.jphs.org) is the main outlet for the JPHS and is an excellent and comprehensive source of information about the history of Jamaica Plain.

Did you know there were automobile manufacturers in JP in the early 20th century? One was Farnham & Nelson. "A considerable portion of their factory work is also supplied in making bodies for those cars whose owners desire a closed body for winter, and an open one for summer"

St. Thomas Aquinas is the mother Catholic parish of JP and West Roxbury. It was established in 1869 and the church was dedicated on August 17, 1873. After the Civil War Catholics were numerous enough in JP for the Archbishop to establish a parish.

One of the many amazing things on the Monument Square tour is a Dudley Stone - we have several in JP but the one by the Monument is the biggest. It marks 5 miles to the Boston Townhouse (known today as the Old Statehouse).
