We are grateful that WordPowered (formerly WriteBoston) is a recipient of a Cummings Foundation Sustaining Grant of $50,000 since 2018. This generous support has powered our core programs: Teens in Print and Collaborative Coaching, helping us enrich youth literacy and strengthen educator support across the state.

This support enables us to offer high-quality literacy that centers youth voice and choice, no-cost Summer Teacher Institutes for educators, and stipends for our youth journalists and storytellers.

Founded in 1986, the Cummings Foundation supports countless organizations with an array of causes across Northeastern Massachusetts, making a real difference in their communities - and we are honored to be one of them.

Our teen reporters were in their Victorian era for the Summer Journalism Institute Showcase! Students in our social media group transformed the fifth floor of Suffolk University into a banquet with masks, fans, and fun to set the stage for students in our magazine, video, and podcasting groups to share their multimedia projects.

Thou hast been summoned to attend our yearly banquet. Our youth come together to create projects and write articles so their voices are heard in the community. Please come support our teen reporters and see everything from short podcasts, group-made films, a magazine, and articles made by our journalists, all whilst in their Victorian attire!

“Revolution” is the theme of this year’s Summer Journalism Institute Showcase (or SJI), in recognition of the United States Semiquincentennial. The showcase offers an authentic opportunity to engage with our young people’s explorations of this theme using multimedia forms.

The SJI Showcase is the first of a series of events kicking off the celebration of WordPowered’s 25th anniversary. Throughout the year, we will be joined by students and authors who prove that storytelling isn’t just a record of change; it’s part of the mechanism by which revolution happens.

As part of our annual Summer Journalism Institute, Teens in Print recruits college students from across Boston to share the multimedia skills they’re studying with our teen reporters. Equipped with up-to-date technology and information, our youth leaders inspire their working group of young reporters to collaboratively create a mixed-media product. Over the course of five weeks, TiPsters’ collective work culminates in the creation of a magazine, two podcast episodes, a short film, a social media takeover, and an end-of-summer showcase.

An integral part of this peer-led process is connecting our youth leaders with someone who possesses the knowledge of in-classroom facilitation skills, curriculum management, empathy, curiosity, and a social justice-centered approach to working with young people – and that’s where our Collaborative Coaching Specialist, JerDrema (Dreme) Flynt, M.Ed, MBA, comes in with over a decade's worth of knowledge and experiences to guide our teacher cohort.

Dreme and our TiP Program Manager, Elvis Alvarado, led a two-week training for our youth leaders to walk away with a toolbox of facilitation strategies, community builders, and a structure for how to approach building community spaces for our TiPsters that dismantle white supremacy as they share ideas, learn and practice skills, and make materials together. By the end of their time learning with our program, our youth leaders developed the capacity to design a student-centered curriculum focused on their media expertise and youth voice.

We welcome and celebrate our five youth leaders this summer: Vania Almeida (Video Youth Leader), Cal LaFauci (Podcast Youth Leader), Varsha Vijay (Social Media Youth Leader), Jacob Kaczorowski (Magazine Youth Leader), and Clare Ablett (Writing Mentor).

Clare, a former TiPster turned youth leader, shared this about her experience thus far with working with our journalists: “Being able to return as a Youth Leader this summer has been an amazing experience. It is so exciting to see the next generation of Tipsters and work with them on their writing journeys.”

We are grateful to Philanthropy Massachusetts' Summer Fund for awarding a $10,000 grant to support our Summer Journalism Institute!

Founded in 1971, the Summer Fund is a donor collaborative that supports summer camps and enrichment programs for underserved youth throughout Greater Boston. The Summer Journalism Institute empowers Boston-area teens to strengthen their writing, reporting, and storytelling skills while exploring issues that matter to their communities. This short film celebrates the creative and courageous efforts of young writers, Indigenous leaders, archivists, historians, and artists ahead of the 250th celebration of the American Revolution.
