The Supreme Court just gave the Trump administration more room to move forward with its attack on mail voting.

But let’s be clear: the Court did NOT rule that Trump’s restrictions are legal or constitutional. The ruling was about whether states challenged the order too early. The legal fight is not over.

What should concern us right now is the timing.

About 30% of all ballots cast in 2024 were mail ballots. Millions of people rely on them, including people who work long hours, caregivers, people with disabilities, military and overseas voters, and people who may not be able to easily get to a polling place.

Now, just weeks before ballots start going out, the administration is trying to change how mail voting works.

New federal requirements could mean new voter lists, new ballot envelopes, new tracking systems and more bureaucracy between voters and their ballots.

And USPS is defending some of these new requirements by comparing mail ballots to replica explosives and cremated remains.

That should tell us something about where this is headed.

The threat isn't only banning a way to vote. It's making the process more confusing, complicated and unpredictable until people have a harder time getting their ballot and getting it counted.

So yes, we should keep fighting this in the courts.

But we also need to make sure our communities know the rules, know their options and don't let confusion keep them from voting.

The fight for voting access doesn't stop in the courtroom. It happens wherever people are trying to exercise their right to vote.
