The 6Cs of Positive Youth Development
#5 COMPETENCE: Strong Girls know how to get things done!

We build our SWSG mentees skills to be effective in school, social situations, and in preparing for their futures. Through participation in our program and greater community, they develop the skills and knowledge to be capable of successfully fulfilling what they want to do in life.

#4 CHARACTER: Strong Girls embrace their individuality!

We view our SWSG mentees as strong individuals who should embrace their distinct mental and moral qualities. We help them develop a sense of independence, individuality, and strong connection to their values and principles, fostering in them a sense of responsibility to themselves, their communities, and what they believe is right.

#3 CONTRIBUTION: Strong girls know how to make a positive difference!

We work with our SWSG mentees to help them identify the variety of ways in which they add value to situations. Through the development of leadership skills, they identify what is important to them and how to make a difference.

#2 CARING: Strong Girls show kindness and concern for others!

We help our SWSG mentees develop a sense of altruism through the practice of compassion and empathy. In working to understand the value of diversity and demonstrating their dedication to others in their community, they build the unconscious ability to take into consideration the wellbeing of others.

SWSG uses a research model called the 6Cs of Positive Youth Development to evaluate positive change and impact for our mentees.

As we prepare to kick-off our Fall 2024 programming season, follow our campaign to learn about these core, personal capacity themes.

#1 CONNECTION: Strong Girls value community!

Cultivating female-centered community is at the heart of what we do. We work to instill a sense of safety, structure, and belonging in our youth. They form positive bonds from which they learn and grow, not only with their mentors, but with professional women, local area female change-makers, and each other!
