Through a synthesis of the arts and technology, the project is an invitation to examine our history and bring a new understanding to the concept of Nation Building. I Was Here: Reshaping the American Commemorative Landscape

Created by photographing contemporary African Americans as archetypal Ancestor Spirits, the Portraits invoke the Human Family - Man, Woman, Child, Mother, Father, Sister, Brother. These emblematic Ancestor Spirits Portraits ask us to examine who we are to each other, who we are as a nation and how we can work to heal the wound that enslavement created in our citizenship. The project is a synthesis of history, image, geography, and soundscape creating an opportunity for citizens of all ages to come face to face and heart to heart with a spiritual history rarely, if ever, encountered on the streets of America.

Looking back on The I Was Here Team’s time at the CODAworx CODAsummit in Santa Fe!

Our co-founders recently joined artists, designers, and creative leaders for conversations exploring the intersections of art, technology, and public space. The CodaSummit creates an incredible opportunity to share our work more with the world of public artists, commissioners and fabricators. Connecting with others who are exploring new ways for art to engage people and places.

Our relationship with CODAworx has been a key part of the I Was Here journey, and we’re grateful for the opportunities, conversations, and connections that continue to grow from this partnership.

Thank you to CODAworx for bringing this community together. We’re excited to expand our reach and learn more about the visionaries that are shaping the public art world.

We’re going back to Broward County!

We’re honored to share that, thanks to renewed funding from the Broward County Cultural Division, we’ll be creating an expanded initiative in Broward County.
We’re especially excited to begin working with noted educator, Dr. Nicole Johnson to create a public festival of Broward youth at MAD Arts in March.

We’re excited to reconnect, continue building relationships, and create new opportunity for the youth of Broward County!

Thank you for believing in this work and helping make the next chapter possible. We can’t wait to begin!

Our co-founder Marjorie Guyon is off to Santa Fe for the CODAsummit with CODAworx!

We’re wishing her a wonderful trip as she shares more about I Was Here and the ideas behind the project. Our work with CODAworx has been such a meaningful part of the I Was Here journey, and we’re grateful for the opportunities, connections, and conversations that have come from this partnership.

We wanted to share a few more moments from our time with the students at Henry Clay High School.

These workshops have given us the opportunity to slow down, listen, and create space for students to reflect on the power of ancestry and their role in the communities they are part of.

We’re grateful for the conversations and connections that came out of this workshop series and for everyone who helped make these moments possible.

This past weekend, we welcomed the OBY girls to I Was Here headquarters for another workshop with Operation Be You.

Through conversation, reflection, and storytelling, the girls explored identity, history, community, and the stories that shape who we are.

We’re grateful for the conversations, questions, and perspectives they continue to bring into this work. We’re grateful for the donuts and apple fritters too….thank you Barry Burton!
