For decades before Lawrence Park was even established, Mount Sinai was right here anchoring this Houston community. In the 1960s, Dr. Gilbert’s father was the pastor, actively advocating for neighborhood improvements. Today, his son stood on that very same ground to bless a groundbreaking that will continue to benefit generations to come. From legacy to future, the impact lives on.

Over 100 neighbors packed the Bahalim family’s front porch and patio for a concert organized by the Houston Parking Reform Coalition: all to imagine a city with fewer parking lots and more homes, safer walks, and real community spaces.

There’s no substitute for walking it.

Today, the Patterson Bridge Task Force explored the Patterson and Rutland Bridge corridors on foot, experiencing the dramatic elevation changes of the bayou trails and seeing how places that are physically so close can feel so far apart when the connection is missing.

What makes this landscape special is its scale and its layers: White Oak Bayou’s stormwater infrastructure, an unexpectedly large natural landscape in the middle of the city, wildlife habitat, parks and trails, and continued opportunities for adaptive reuse, all woven together.

The opportunity here is bigger than building two bridges. It’s about connecting these pieces into a public landscape that works harder for Houston: infrastructure that manages water, connects neighborhoods, supports nature, creates places people want to be, and becomes a source of civic pride.

Thank you to everyone who walked with us, shared their expertise, and helped us see the possibilities on the ground.

Did you know there’s a buried underpass hidden beneath the West Belt Railway? https://ATOTB.org/underpass

Just steps from Shell Energy Stadium, a former Preston Street / St. Charles underpass once connected East Downtown and the East End. Today, it’s filled in and largely forgotten but it represents an intriguing opportunity to explore reconnecting neighborhoods that are separated by active rail infrastructure.

📧 If you’d like to see this opportunity explored, contact your City Council Member and ask them to support an engineering and planning study.
Sometimes the shortest path forward has been there all along.

Heads up, White Oak Bayou Trail users 🚧

A section of the White Oak Bayou Greenway near Shepherd is expected to be closed to foot and bike traffic daily from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. while repairs are underway.

Based on a notice shared on Facebook, the closure could last for up to 6 months. The work appears to be related to concrete panel repairs and is likely associated with Harris County Flood Control District activity in the area.

Plan ahead and expect to reroute during daytime hours.

⚠️ At this time, we have not seen an official signed detour in place.

We’ve reached out to Houston Parks Board, Memorial Heights TIRZ 5, the Greater Heights Super Neighborhood Council, and Houston Heights Association Land Use to request more information about the project scope, timeline, and detour plan.
