Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts The interdisciplinary arts resource bridging disciplines, stimulating dialogue and supporting the creation of innovative works at the University of Houston

Honoring Cynthia Woods Mitchell's lifelong commitment to the arts, the Mitchell Center exists to promote innovative collaboration and interchange between artists, performers, writers and scholars, faculty and students across disciplines, thus empowering the discovery of new directions and possibilities in art. By supporting these conditions of possibility, the creative efforts of one art form can

become an influence or resource for another to foster new artistic endeavors, challenging previous understandings of contemporary art. From this new understanding comes works of art that bridge boundaries, propagate knowledge, generate new perspectives and inspire creative solutions to real-world problems. Through developing partnerships with Houston artistic and cultural institutions, the Mitchell Center is committed to making its programs available to the local community. In the examination and celebration of the human condition, these activities and programs intend to transform society through the creative use of human intellect, passion and imagination.

Join Jax Neal at Lawndale Art center for the debut of “7 Days in December” from December 7 - 13 in the John M O’Quinn Gallery. During this durational performance, Neal will lie down in a running shower for 6 hours each day. The gallery hours will shift to be 11 AM - 5 PM from Sunday-Saturday of that week.

In the words of Neal:
“The shower is the place we go to take the rain, to be drained of what we know, and what we wear, what we fear, and what we believe, and to see what is left of us when it’s all been washed away.

“The performance is not just the shower, it is also the end of the day, when the faucet turns off, and that lights go away, and the artist gets up, dries off, goes home, and comes back to do it the next day.

“Artists are known to make, to do, and for me, to move. But in this work I want to do the opposite. To sit down, to undo, to remove. And look at what is left.”

Jax Neal is a multidisciplinary poet, choreographer, and performance artist currently based in Los Angeles, California. Born in Houston, Texas, Neal grew up writing and performing with Meta-Four Houston, an internationally-acclaimed poetry slam collective. Neal now creates hybrid Gesamtkunstwerk, incorporating performance art, physical theater, poetry, and dance, often combining vulnerable storytelling with highly physical tests of endurance.

Please note: gallery hours will be Sunday, December 7 – Saturday, December 13 from 11 AM – 5 PM. Free & open to the public

The shower, fabricated by Matt Fries of Moon Papas, is a stage prop which cycles water in a closed loop system.

This project is funded in partnership with the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts

The Mitchell center extends a warm welcome to our new Scholars in Residence!

Meet Connor Greer, Scholar in Residence at the Creative Writing Program ( ). Currently, Connor is teaching The Arts In Houston, an interdisciplinary course exploring the languages and values of diverse artistic communities in Houston from early twentieth century to the present.

About Connor:
Connor Greer (b. 1995) is a fiction writer from Rochester, NY. He is 28 years old, about 73 inches tall, and weighs around 170 pounds. He completed an MFA in fiction at the University of Michigan, where he was a Zell Fellow and received a Hopwood Award for Graduate Short Fiction as well as the Akin Bird Thesis Award. He tends to think of his work as an investigation of subjecthood within the imperial core and the mutually-reinforcing relationship between capitalism, technology, and knowledge which quantifies and objectifies it—but he is often wrong. In 2023, he was a finalist for the BOMB Fiction Contest. He has been in residence at Tenjinyama Art Studio in Sapporo, Japan, Dar Meso in Tunis, Tunisia, and NES Listamiðstöð in Skagaströnd, Iceland. He still believes in the classic website: www.connorgreer.info.

About the Scholar in Residence Program:
The Scholars in Residence program is for emerging artists, writers and curators. This one to two year residency as a teaching fellow is for post-graduate artists and scholars and rotates among the five units of the Mitchell Center: School of Art, Moores School of Music, School of Theatre & Dance, Creative Writing Program and Blaffer Art Museum.

**Tickets now on sale for Las Fenix LIVE in concert at HCCC on August 1st!**

Inspired by "La Fuente Del Deseo," a solo exhibition by Georgina Treviño that transports viewers to the vibrant norteño culture of the Mexico-U.S. border, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is pleased to present a special one-night concert with Las Fenix on Thursday, August 1st!

Las Fenix is an all-female norteño band featuring five sisters from Houston, Texas. The group has made their mark on a traditionally male-dominated genre with high-energy live performances and a singular sound that brings a contemporary pop valence to traditional Mexican cumbia and norteño sounds. The band has toured extensively in Mexico and the U.S., performing at venues including Los Angeles Dodgers Stadium and acting as musical representatives of the “Don’t Mess With Texas” campaign.

Doors will open at 6:15, and the concert starts at 7pm. Before the performance, visitors will also have the opportunity to meet exhibiting artist Georgina Treviño in person and buy customized exhibition merchandise!

To buy tickets, visit>> https://crafthouston.org/event/las-fenix-in-concert/

**"Tree of Life" Concert with DACAMERA, 11/9 at 5:30PM!**

Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 9th, when HCCC and Da Camera of Houston will present a free, one-night chamber music concert inspired by the fall exhibition, "Tree of Life." This unique exhibition showcases sculptural objects and woodwind instruments made from the African blackwood tree, which has a nearly black core and is prized in instrument making for the melodious tones that can be produced from its density and fine grain. Musicians from DACAMERA’s Young Artist Program will present works inspired by the artwork in the gallery. Experience this distinctive and historic craft material through the lens of music in this special program, supported by Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.
