🩵💜 July is Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month, and we’re bringing important conversations about women’s health, wellness, and self-care to communities across Texas.

Join the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute and the Fibroid Institute of Texas for our UFAM Self-Care Forums, where we’ll discuss uterine fibroids, treatment options, reproductive health, and the importance of advocating for your health. Together, we’re creating safe spaces for education, support, and empowerment.

New Orleans was full of culture, joy, and purpose as we celebrated Freedom Summer during Essence Festival and reflected on America’s 250th anniversary.

Our incoming Executive Director, Christian Guillory, and Development Director, Jackie Simien, represented the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute with pride—connecting with hundreds of festivalgoers, including Texans from across the state, about civic engagement, community leadership, and the power of our vote.

Every conversation mattered. Every connection strengthened the movement. That’s what Freedom Summer is all about—meeting people where they are, honoring our history, and organizing for our future.

“An America As Good As Its Promise” — Hon.Barbara Jordan

In July 1976 — this nation’s 200th anniversary — the Honorable Barbara Jordan told America what its people wanted: an America as good as its promise.

Fifty years later, on this nation’s 250th anniversary, that promise still isn’t fully kept. The gap between what America says and what America delivers — in equality, in justice, in opportunity — is still real for too many.

At the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute, we carry that charge forward. Fifty years after Jordan spoke those words, and 250 years after independence, we are still striving, still leading, still building toward an America as good as its promise.

Join the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute (BJLI), the L. Clifford Davis Legal Association (LCDLA), National Pan-Hellenic of Tarrant County along side other grassroots orgs to bring community leaders, advocates, elected officials, and residents for an important conversation focused on civic engagement, leadership development, and collective action.

161 years ago, on June 19, 1865, freedom finally reached the last enslaved Black Americans — right here in Galveston, Texas. What started as a Texas story became a national reckoning, and today it’s a holiday we celebrate from coast to coast. 🎉

We are proud Black Texans, and we are proud Americans, and we carry both of those truths into everything we do.

At the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute, we know freedom isn’t just a date on the calendar — it’s a responsibility. Barbara Jordan gave Black Texans a voice in rooms that were never built for us, and 161 years after Galveston, we’re still doing that work: developing leaders, engaging our communities, and pushing for true equity in the law and in everyday life. Because freedom for some has never been enough — we’re fighting for freedom for all.

💜 Fort Worth, we’re coming together for Texas Fibroid Awareness Month! 💜

Join the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute (BJLI) and the Fibroid Institute of Texas, with event coordination by Pearls & Promises, for our annual Self-Care Forum dedicated to education, empowerment, and wellness for women and girls.

Uterine fibroids impact millions of women, with Black women experiencing fibroids at disproportionately higher rates and often facing greater barriers to diagnosis, treatment, and care. This forum creates a safe space for honest conversations, expert information, community support, and resources that can help women advocate for their health.

We especially encourage Black women, Black mothers, women of color, mothers of color, and daughters to join us for this important intergenerational conversation. Whether you’re navigating fibroids yourself, supporting a loved one, or simply want to learn more, this event is for you.

✨ PLUS: Bring a Period Product Donation! ✨
We are collecting pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and other menstrual hygiene products to support women and girls in our community. Donations from our period product drive will benefit I Am HER, helping ensure access to essential menstrual products for those in need.
