What if sight word practice could feel like PLAY? 🎨

For some readers, learning a word takes lots of repetition. Large muscle movements can give you a fun way to squeeze in those extra repetitions—without making your child feel like they’re drilling flashcards!

Try “Paint the Wall”:

🖌️ Pretend you’re painting a giant wall.
❤️ “Paint it RED!”
💙 “Now BLUE!”
💚 “Now GREEN!”

As your child makes big painting motions, have them practice the sight word each time.

No paint. No supplies. Just imagination + movement + repetition!

Because sometimes the best practice doesn't feel like practice at all. 💛

Move it. Say it. Repeat it.

Slap it, clap it! 👋👏

This simple spelling strategy helps children practice sight words by connecting the letters they see with the word they say.

Try it like this:

👋 Slap down your arm as you say each letter name:
“I… S…”

👏 Clap as you say the word:
“IS!”

I — S — IS!

One important reminder: we’re not blending the letter sounds here. Sight words often have letters that don’t make the sounds children expect, so we say the letter names instead.

It may look like arm blending—but the goal is different!

See it. Spell it. Say it. ✨

Save this one for your next sight word practice session!

Want sight words to stick? ✋ Don’t just look at them. MOVE them!

Adding movement + touch + visual input gives your child another pathway for practicing and remembering a word. 🧠

Try this:

👆 Print the word BIG on copy paper.
👆 Place it under a textured surface.
👆 Have your child trace each letter with **two fingers**, keeping their elbow close to their body.

Try a needlepoint mat, sandpaper, LEGO mat, or carpet!

The goal? See it. Say it. Trace it. Remember it. ✨

Save this for your next sight word practice session!

“We’ve practiced this word SO many times. Why doesn’t my child remember it?” 👀

Here’s the thing: some kids simply need more repetitions.

For many children, it may take 4–14 times seeing and practicing a word before it becomes automatic.

But for struggling readers? It can take 20–100+ repetitions.😮

That doesn’t mean they’re not trying.
It doesn’t mean they’re not capable.
And telling them to “try harder” won’t make the word stick.

What CAN help?
➡️ More practice
➡️ More repetition
➡️ More encouragement
➡️ Lots of opportunities to experience success

If your child needs to practice the same word again…and again…and again, that’s okay.

They’re not behind because they need more practice. They’re learning. 💚

Save this for the next time you find yourself thinking, “But we JUST practiced that!” 🤪

What exactly is a sight word? 👀

A sight word is any word your child can recognize instantly- without having to stop and sound it out. As children become stronger readers, the goal is for every word they learn to eventually become a sight word.

✨ Parent tip: Introduce just 1–2 new words at a time. Practicing a small number of words consistently is often more effective than trying to learn a long list all at once.

This is just the beginning! Over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing simple, research-based games and strategies you can use at home to help your child build word recognition and reading confidence.

💬 What sight words does your child find the trickiest? Tell us in the comments!
