Did you know dyslexia affects the way the brain processes written language? It can make learning to read and spell more challenging, but it has nothing to do with a child's intelligence or potential.

With the right instruction, support, and encouragement, children with dyslexia can grow into confident readers.

Our October spotlight is the Patrick Beaver Learning Resource Center — a valued HCS partner helping us Branch Out Through Literacy.

Through dedicated volunteers who work directly with students in our schools, literacy support for children and families, and training opportunities that strengthen our educators, Patrick Beaver is helping build stronger readers across our community.

An incredible group of educators spent time learning, growing, and adding powerful new tools to their teaching toolkit through Orton-Gillingham training at the Patrick Beaver Learning Resource Center.

And we’re not saying goodbye after training week! 🙌 Throughout the school year, we’ll walk alongside this cohort as they put their learning into practice, continuing toward full certification as Orton-Gillingham classroom educators.

Let’s teach a sight word from start to finish! This is Part 2.

Watch as we finish our sight word lesson by moving from practice → memory → meaning.

First, we add texture! The student traces the word on an embroidery mat while looking at the large-print word:

🔊 Out loud
🤫 Whisper
🤐 Silently

Then she spells the word on a marker board 3 times, saying each letter as she writes.

Next? Cover it up and spell it from memory. ✨
And finally, the most important step:
💬 Put the word in a sentence.
Because knowing a sight word isn't just about recognizing or spelling it.

Meaning is the true measure of learning and understanding. 💛

What does it actually look like to teach a sight word? 👀
Let’s teach one from start to finish! This is Part 1.

First, we:
🔤 Introduce the word
🗣️ Sound it out
👀 Identify the “tricky” letters—the ones that don’t make the sound we expect

Then it’s time to SKY WRITE!

Have the student trace the letters in the air with straight arms and big movements:

🔊 Out loud
🤫 Whisper voice
🤐 Silently

That big movement adds another sensory pathway to the learning process and gives the brain more ways to practice and remember the word.

And remember: We’re not just memorizing a word—we’re building a memory for how the word is spelled.🧠✨
