Harper House/Hickory History Center Harper House and the Hickory History Center are open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The last tour of the day will start at 3:00 PM.

Considered "the finest Queen Anne interior styling in the entire state,” Harper House and the accompanying Lyerly House are poised to serve the broad spectrum of visitors both near and far. The Harper House can be seen by a guided tour only starting at 10:00 AM. The tours will last for approximately 1 hour. The tour of Harper House is $12 per person; Children 6 - 14 years old are $8 per person and 5 years old and under are free. Active-Duty Military with ID are also free.

HACC members, this special evening is for you! On November 14, gather with us at historic Harper House for the stories, songs, homespun humor and heart of Michael Reno Harrell.

Admission is FREE for current HACC members. Not a member yet? Non-member admission is $10, and we would love to welcome you.

🏛️ A Glimpse Into Family Life at Harper House!

Unlike the formal Grand Parlor, the Family Parlor was a more relaxed space where the Shuler family gathered for everyday life.

The room featured separate desks for Mr. and Mrs. Shuler. While he managed the household accounts, she handled correspondence and social obligations.

One of the room’s most fascinating secrets lies beneath the wallpaper! 🎨 The walls were originally decorated with murals painted by Major F. A. Grace. Although they could not be restored, they were carefully preserved beneath the wallpaper and remain a rare surviving example of his work in Hickory.

The room also features a beautiful chandelier designed by Mr. Harper Sr. and an Eastlake-style secretary desk from Newton’s former Virginia Shipp Hotel.
