🪱 🎃 Don't let your jack-o'-lantern ghost you after Halloween—give it a second life as a wiggly wonderland!

Join Waste Free Greenwich in partnership with the Greenwich Botanical Center for a hands-on, family-friendly workshop where you'll discover how composting worms transform spooky seasonal scraps into nutrient-rich "black gold" for your garden.

• What to bring: Your post-Halloween pumpkin (carved or whole, guts and all!). Don't have one? No worries—a limited number of pumpkins will be available for purchase on site.

• What to expect: Kids will love getting their hands dirty, meeting nature's best recyclers up close, and learning simple ways to keep food waste out of the trash while caring for the Earth at home.

📆 When: Friday, November 6. Drop in anytime between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM

📍 Where: GBC’s Horticulture Building

🎃 October in Review: Cultivating Zero Waste Around Town! ♻️

Our team has been busy growing community connections and spreading the word about waste free living all month long.

Here’s a look back at our favorite autumn highlights:

• Backyard Composting Workshop: We teamed up with the Greenwich Botanical Center to teach local gardeners the ABCs of turning everyday food scraps into "black gold" for the soil. 🪱

• Greenwich Library Community Fair: It was wonderful meeting fellow residents, sharing our mission, and connecting with folks eager to dive deeper into waste reduction and sustainability. 📕

• Ghouls in the Garden: We had a spooktacular time demonstrating composting to all the little ghouls and goblins at GBC’s festive seasonal celebration! 👻🍂

Waste Free Greenwich is thrilled to an official partner for Food Waste Prevention Week, taking place September 28-October 4, 2026!

Joining forces with more than 600 public and private organizations, we are committed to amplifying the message that reducing food waste supports: 💰 a stronger economy, 🌎 a healthier environment, and 🥦 greater afood security for all.

Together, we can inspire action and create meaningful change.

To celebrate Waste Free Greenwich whipped up some carrot top pesto 🥕 created from carrots from Daffodil Hill Growers - part of our CSA box organized by thefoodshednetwork - with a recipe from lindsayjeanhard. Delish on pasta with autumn veggies!

As the new school year kicks off, Waste Free Greenwich is back in the cafeterias, empowering Greenwich Public School students to tackle waste!

Through the Zero Waste Schools program - a joint effort between Waste Free Greenwich, the PTA Council Green Schools Committee, and GPS Facilities - our volunteers are conducting two-day sorting trainings across the seven elementary schools with active food scrap recycling programs.

Last week, we kicked off at Hamilton Avenue and Riverside Schools, guiding K-5 students through the cafeteria sorting routine: emptying liquids from recyclable containers, scraping food scraps for composting, rescuing unopened items for the share fridge, and recycling right.

Students were fully engaged thanks to interactive educational activities, including an instructional video, a hands-on worm bin encounter, a "Ready, Set, Sort!" video game, and a friendly school-wide sorting competition.

The results speak for themselves! At Hamilton Avenue, the Huskies slashed their cafeteria trash by 81%, while the Riverside Red Hawks achieved an impressive 77% diversion rate. At both schools, food waste made up over half of the lunchroom stream, but is diverted to higher and better through the program.

Collected food scraps are transported to Quantum Biopower, an anaerobic digester that turns food waste into renewable energy and nutrient-rich digestate. At Hamilton Avenue, surplus is put in the share fridge, providing students extra servings, while Riverside partners with Food Rescue US, Fairfield County to donate surplus food directly to Kids In Crisis.

Waste Free Greenwich is proud to be a partner of International Coastal Cleanup Day sponsored by Greenwich Green & Clean on Saturday, September 19 (9am-1pm) at Greenwich Point Park.

International Coastal Cleanup - the largest single-day volunteer effort for ocean health - is a global volunteer initiative dedicated to removing marine debris from shorelines, oceans and inland waterways.

All non-biodegradable trash will be tallied and reported to Save the Sound for submission to the Ocean Conservancy which coordinates with organizations worldwide to analyze the pollution of the earth’s waters.

Check-in at the parking lot across from the first concession stand. Bring gloves & buckets from home, but will be available on site. Pre-registration is encouraged, but walk-ins will be welcomed. Community Service Certificates will be available.

🌍 YOU HAVE THE POWER: Small Actions, Big Impact! 💚

Did you know that half of the 330 million tons of plastic produced globally every year is single-use plastic? Single-use items like plastic bags, cups, and straws directly threaten wildlife, with over 700 species currently at risk of extinction.

We recently visited the Bruce Museum's exhibit on mass extinctions, and the takeaway couldn't be clearer: our daily choices matter.

Here are simple, impactful sustainable solutions featured in the exhibit:

♻️ Reducing Plastic Use: Say no to single-use plastics! Switch to reusable water bottles, shopping bags, and containers to protect our local ecosystems and marine life.

🥗 Reducing Food Waste: Plan meals ahead, compost food scraps, and buy only what you need to keep organic waste out of landfills.

🔄 Recycling & Upcycling: Keep valuable materials in circulation by recycling properly and finding creative ways to reuse everyday items.

🛍️ Consuming Less & Choosing Local: Support local, eco-friendly products to reduce your environmental footprint and build a stronger community.

Every small step helps prevent plastic pollution and preserve biodiversity for generations to come. 🌿✨

Celebrating community, good eats and zero waste!

Waste Free Greenwich welcomed supporters to the clambake pavilion at Greenwich Point with delicious food, great conversation and gorgeous views for a Zero Waste Potluck Picnic 🧺

The evening demonstrated how gatherings can be waste free by:

🍽️ using reusable foodware
🥦 repurposing oft discarded stems, peels and leaves in dishes
🍎 composting food scraps
