Nominations for our Treasured Trees Program are now open!

This special program honors remarkable trees on private properties throughout our community. 🌳

A Treasured Tree may be cherished for many reasons: a special memory or family history, a unique shape, beautiful spring flowers or fall foliage, or its impressive size or age.🌸

Trees will be evaluated by our 2026 judging panel. Winning entries will receive a framed photograph of their tree at our Treasured Trees Celebration on October 22, a commemorative nameplate, and recognition as part of the Greenwich Tree Conservancy's roster of Treasured Trees.

Every tree has a story. We invite you to share yours.

Another beautiful tree is in bloom near the Greenwich Tree Conservancy office. This stunning Cornus kousa (Kousa Dogwood) is in front of the greenhouse. 🌸

Also known as Japanese Dogwood or Chinese Dogwood, the Kousa Dogwood puts on a spectacular display each spring. While our native flowering dogwoods bloom in April before their leaves emerge, Kousa dogwoods flower a month later, with creamy-white blooms nestled among their fresh green foliage.

This small ornamental tree can reach about 30 feet in height and offers year-round interest. In fall, it produces distinctive berry-like fruits and vibrant reddish-purple to scarlet foliage. Mature trees also develop attractive exfoliating bark, adding beauty throughout the winter months.

We are fortunate to be surrounded by so many remarkable trees here in Greenwich! 🌳

Join us on Saturday, June 6 from 9–10:30 AM for a brisk fitness walk through the trails at the Greenwich Audubon Center, led by tree and fitness enthusiasts. Special for this month’s walk: we’ll look for birds along the trails with a new Audubon guide! 🐦

Enjoy the benefits of exercise along with the fresh air and beauty of our urban forests.

All ages are welcome. Bring your energy and wear comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. We’ll meet at the front of the center.🌳

Another tree in bloom is Prunus serotina, commonly known as Black Cherry, Eastern Wild Black Cherry, Wild Cherry, or Wild Rum Cherry. 🌸

This fast-growing native tree has a graceful pyramidal shape and can reach 60–80 ft. tall. In spring, its small white flowers provide nectar for pollinators, while also serving as a larval host plant for several butterfly species.

By late summer, the tree produces dark purple fruit that attracts songbirds. 🍒🐦

It is a beautiful and valuable tree for wildlife throughout the seasons.

Thank you to all who attended our Branching Out: Trees in Contemporary Art program on Wednesday at the Greenwich Botanical Center, our partner for this special event.🌳

Attendees enjoyed an inspiring and insightful lecture by art historian Page Knox, who explored how contemporary artists interpret and reimagine trees in their work, using them as powerful metaphors for ecology, identity, and our evolving relationship with the natural world.🌸

In partnership with the Town Tree Warden, we plant trees on municipal properties throughout Greenwich to help grow a healthier, greener, and more resilient community.

We can’t help but admire this week’s amazing view from the GTC office window and along the Merritt Parkway, too! This beautiful Paulownia tomentosa is more commonly known as a Royal Empress Tree, Princess Tree, or Royal Paulownia.🌸

Named for Russian Princess Anna Pavlovna (1795–1865), the species name tomentosa means “softly hairy” in Latin.

In spring, the tree produces large upright clusters of fragrant, tubular lavender flowers that can reach up to 14 inches long. A fast-growing tree, it can reach 50 feet tall and 30 feet wide in just 10 years.

While its blooms are stunning, it is considered an invasive species, so please do not plant one. We can still appreciate its beauty from afar each spring!🥰
