We're hosting a free food distribution for income-eligible Kent County residents! Boxes may include milk & cheese, canned or frozen meat, dry pasta & cereals, canned vegetables & fruit, and more.

📍 Location: 121 MLK Jr. St SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49507 (Line starts on Jefferson Ave next to the Kent County Human Services Building)

🗓️ Date & Time: Thursday, July 9, 2026 | 9:00 am – 1:00 pm (or while supplies last)
Eligibility:

• Monthly household income at or below $8,038 for a family of four
• Participation in CSFP, WIC, FDPRI, SNAP, SSI, or students receiving free/reduced-price school meals
• Or a need for food

It was a great day for a picnic at Millennium Park! 🌞 Our Senior Services division spent the day connecting over conversation, music, games, and food as part of our ongoing El Centro Explora program. This new program provides older adults with cultural, educational, and recreational experiences throughout West Michigan.

El Centro Explora programs are free for participants thanks to support from Molina Healthcare and the Michigan Association of Senior Centers.

Kent County Community Action is looking for compassionate, dependable volunteers to help ensure older adults in Kent County receive the nutritious meals they rely on each day.

We currently have two urgent volunteer opportunities:

🚗 Home Delivered Meals Delivery Assistant
Help our drivers deliver meals directly to older adults throughout Kent County. Volunteers ride along with our drivers, assist with carrying meals to participants' doors, and provide a friendly face and brief social connection.
• Mondays only
• 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and/or 12:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.
• No driver's license required
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
• Short-term or long-term volunteers welcome

🍽️ Kitchen Volunteer
Join our kitchen team and help prepare meals that support seniors' health and independence. We are especially seeking volunteers who can make an ongoing commitment.
Duties may include:
• Light meal preparation
• Traying and sealing meals for home delivery
• Packing meals for delivery routes
• Monday through Friday opportunities available
• Flexible scheduling between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
• Basic kitchen experience preferred
• Long-term volunteers encouraged

A brief orientation and training will be provided. All volunteers must complete a background check and s*x offender registry check prior to volunteering.

A few hours of your time can make a meaningful difference. By volunteering, you're helping older adults maintain their independence, improve food security, and stay connected to their community.

Exploring, learning, and staying connected! We are excited to announce that our Senior Services team recently launched El Centro Explora, a new program designed to help older adults experience cultural, educational, and recreational destinations throughout West Michigan.

Our first outing brought participants to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, where they enjoyed the beautiful gardens, part of the Chihuly exhibit, a tram tour, and time together outdoors. Thanks to support from Molina Healthcare and the Michigan Association of Senior Centers, these enriching experiences are offered at no cost to participants.

More adventures are on the way, including visits to local parks, attractions, and community destinations. We’re excited to help older adults stay active and engaged!

We had a wonderful time at our Spring Into Action Luncheon last week, celebrating the impact of Kent County Community Action programs across our community!

From food distribution and water and utility assistance to essential senior services, our programs help meet some of Kent County’s most pressing needs. Attendees heard firsthand from staff and program participants about how these services are making a meaningful difference in the lives of residents every day.

A special thank-you to Commissioner Nancy Morales for her leadership and support, Advisory Board Member Daniel VanderMolen for his dedication, and everyone who attended and contributed to the event. We are also grateful to our generous sponsors: Consumers Energy, Intandem Credit Union, and Well Design Studio. Your generosity helps strengthen our community and support neighbors in need.
