Today is ! Follow along with our friend Meaghan as she shares how she learned to use her cane, why it was worth the practice, and how she uses it throughout her day.

White canes help people who are blind or visually impaired navigate safely and independently, while letting others know to be mindful as they pass.

You’ll also hear from Sarah, Meaghan’s CLS person, about their time together and why awareness matters. Watch, learn, and share! A little understanding can go a long way 🙌

🌟🌟SPOTLIGHT SUNDAY🌟🌟 Meet Jada and Allie, our interns from Grand Valley State University’s Occupational Science and Therapy Program!

These two have spent their internship working side by side with our Brew Bakers, supporting our kitchen and learning firsthand about occupational therapy in a community setting. One of our favorite parts of hosting GVSU students? They help us learn and improve, too! ❤

Jada grew up in Midland, MI, with three older brothers. She and her husband, Eli, now live in Wyoming, MI, with their dog, Iris 🐶 Outside BCDB, she enjoys time with friends and family, pickleball, walks with her dad and husband, and traveling 🌎 She’s visited Mexico, Greece, Italy, and Kenya, with the Bahamas up next! Her playlists include 2000s rap and R&B, country, and worship music.

Fun fact: Jada won a women’s basketball national championship during her freshman year at Hope College! 🏀

Allie moved to Grand Rapids for undergrad and grad school after spending her middle and high school years in Traverse City. Outside BCDB, she loves spending time with her goldendoodle, Chloe 🐕 hiking, going to the beach, and trying new recipes. She’s also giving golf a try! ⛳ When it comes to music, she loves country and grew up listening to Kid Rock.

Fun fact: Allie is originally from Marquette in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula! 🌲

We asked them what they’ve enjoyed most about coming to BCDB. Jada shared, “I love getting to know the Brew Bakers and their stories along with coming up with ideas to help adapt the environment so the Brew Bakers can be successful while volunteering at BCDB.”

Allie added, “I’ve loved to learn the behind the scenes of all the work and labor of love that goes into each biscuit.”

They’ve tried plenty of tasks around the kitchen, but both agree that building relationships and working alongside our Brew Bakers has been the most fulfilling part 🫶

Jada and Allie, thank you for the care, ideas, and hard work you’ve shared with our kitchen! Thank you to GVSU for continuing to partner with us. We’re honored to be a fieldwork site supporting the next generation of occupational therapy professionals! 🌟🌟

Doing some shopping? A little something in your cart can mean a whole lot in our kitchen ❤

Our nonprofit serves over 300 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With so many Brew Bakers busy making biscuits, kitchen tools wear out and supplies need replenishing. As our community grows, those needs grow, too. Our goal is to never turn someone away and always be a place to learn, contribute, and belong.

🌟🌟SPOTLIGHT SUNDAY🌟🌟 Meet our friend Veronica!

Veronica joins us with Ready For Life on Mondays and Wednesdays. She’s made biscuit dough, filled molds, and washed dishes in our kitchen 👏 Her favorite task? Filling molds!

Outside BCDB, Veronica enjoys dancing, playing games, doing puzzles, and spending time with her dog 🐶 She has two sisters and a niece, loves country music, and is always happy to have a cup of coffee. Her favorite foods? Pepperoni pizza, mac and cheese, Chinese food, and sushi! 😋

Fun fact: Veronica always has a smile on her face and likes to joke around.

When we asked Veronica what she’s learned here, she said “cleaning skills.” 🫧 🧼 She’s getting plenty of practice washing dishes and helping keep our kitchen ready for the next batch. Those are skills she can use wherever she goes 🙌

Veronica, thank you for all your hard work and for keeping us smiling. We love having you in our kitchen! 🌟🌟

Remember that big, curving wall you walked past at our Open House? Look at it now! 😍

It’s now filled with the BCDB story, sharing how we got here and why creating opportunity and community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities means so much to us. We’re proud of how far we’ve come and excited to keep making memories in our new space! ♥️
