Saint Francis Sculpture Garden

Saint Francis Sculpture Garden 2023 Fulton E., Grand Rapids, MI. Walk in nature among the wooded paths in this sculpture garden. This Garden is being developed by Instruments of Hope.

Take a walk in nature and feel the peace and presence of Saint Francis. The 11 acre wooded landscape is reminiscent of the serene Eremo delle Carceri a small hermitage in a steep forest gorge at the Monte Subasio, in Umbria, in middle Italy, four kilometers above Assisi. Francis dedicated himself to a life of preaching and missions, but throughout his life he would frequently withdraw to the Car

ceri to pray. Lovely wooded pathways lead to Garden sites with bronze statues depicting different phases of the life of Francis. There are many quite places for reflection and solitude. The pathways are barrier free for wheel chair access. The Bronze Sculptures of Francis are created by Grand Rapids sculptor Mic Carlson. Carlson's creations were first displayed at the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi, Italy in 2004. The energy of pilgrims and tourist conveyed during the exhibition and the peaceful presence of Francis at Eremo delle Carceri inspired Carlson to bring that spirit to Marywood Academy in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This is the place not far from the city. The garden has many benches for quite reflection, pathways for contemplation and healing. The Sculpture Garden is a work in motion. Currently we have permanently installed 17 of the 24 bronze sculpture and garden sites. This beautiful place is being built and will continue to grow through donation from the generosity of heartfelt people. The Sculpture Garden is always open and free of charge.
