At this time of year you might think that over 200 students of the Grand Island Normal School and Business College were trick or treating or that Mabel and Andrew Hargis were part of a Christmas Tour of Homes. However, the students were invited to a party at the Hargis House which included refreshments, a tour of the home, and ended with dancing and games in the ballroom on the third floor.
There won't be dancing at the host homes of our Dec. 5, 2026 Christmas Tour of Homes but there will be six houses decorated for Christmas for all participants to enjoy and start off the Christmas season. The event is from 10 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and tickets are available from any Hargis House Womans Club member, Ace Hardware, Home Federal Bank on Stolley Park Road, and Five Points Bank on Diers Avenue. For more information call 308.379.6121.

Forty-six years ago, Helen Hargis Hill returned to Grand Island to visit her childhood home following the June 1980 tornadoes. Helen was the daughter of Andrew and Mabel Hargis who built the house in 1898-1899. She flew into Grand Island on October 24, 1980 and later wrote a six page typed journal about the trip. Her great grandchildren shared a copy with the Hargis House Womans Club.
She wrote about the reception the Grand Island Woman's Club held in her honor. She commented that the beautiful staircase had been removed to create an altar when Christ Lutheran Church owned the house. She pointed out where her father's office had been on the first floor and reminisced how she would keep her paper dolls in a drawer of his desk. She referred to the staircase opening as the "well" and that she would throw those same paper dolls down the well.
The photo below appeared in the Grand Island Independent along with an article about Helen's 1980 visit back home.

Please consider Helen's childhood home as a venue for any receptions or parties you are planning for the holidays. It is the perfect place to add a touch of elegance to any event. Contact 308.379.6121 for more information.
