We have been out exploring Grand Island this month with Focus Groups at Grand Island Public, where we learned that the library is so much more than just books. Next we visited College Park at Grand Island for an informational presentation from Ryan O'Niell on elected officials and their roles in our community , We learned some great information from The Platte Generating Station. The timing was perfect, as we were able to see components that we normaly wouldn't due to a temporary shutdown. The last focus group of October took us to Central Platte Natural Resources District where we learned about the numerous projects that they are involved with to help ensure our future.

Earlier this month, Leadership Tomorrow Class 41 spent the day exploring Local Government at the City of Grand Island! 🏛️

The group kicked off the morning by putting their heads together for a team-building activity focused on communication, critical thinking, and collaboration. From there, they dove into a variety of topics, including voting, City Council meetings, budgets, redevelopment planning, Civic Nebraska, ethics, and identity.

A huge thank-you to our presenters for sharing their time, knowledge, and expertise with our class: Tracy Overstreet, Jill Granere, Jack Sheard, Patrick Brown, Chelsey Steinke, Alaina Verplank, George Ayoub, Chad Nabity, Allen Chlopek, Lily Sughroue, and Carlos Barcenas!

We’re grateful for the community leaders who help make these learning opportunities possible and for their commitment to developing the next generation of leaders in our community. 💙

We look forward to seeing Class 41 again in just a few short weeks for our next session! 🌟

Chris Goplin - LT 36

Chris Goplin is an involved community member who is passionate about giving back and making a positive impact. Chris, a member of the Leadership Tomorrow Class 36, currently holds a leadership position at CHI Health St. Francis. Chris consistently looks for ways to support the community whether through participating in trash cleanups, serve as a Mr. Habitat Candidate, or currently serving on the Leadership Unlimited board.

One of the reasons he joined LT was “because someone believed that I could make a positive impact in the future of Grand Island.” That belief and support motivated him to be involved and make a difference in the community. He had heard many positive stories about Leadership Tomorrow from alumni, which also helped spark his interest and commitment. Alumni described the program as an eye-opening experience, even for those who had lived in Grand Island their entire lives.

Chris wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from the sessions but he approached each one with an open mind and willingness to learn. He quickly discovered how much there was to learn about the community. Chris made an effort to attend as many sessions as possible and gained valuable knowledge about Grand Island.

One of the topics that impacted him the most was learning about the nonprofit organizations in our community. He was surprised to discover just how many people in Grand Island are in need of support. Through the sessions, he not only gained a greater understanding of the important role nonprofits play in the community, but also developed a deep respect for the individuals who dedicate their time and efforts to helping others. The experience led him to reflect on his own involvement and realize that he “was not doing enough for the community.”

When it comes to non-profit organizations, Chris encourages people to explore all the organizations available. Taking the time to learn about each organization, what they offer, and the missions they support can help you discover where your passions may align. He believes that any organization you feel personally connected to and which draws you in “is where you should focus your help.”

One of the ways Chris and his family enjoy giving back is through their annual toy donation to Hope Harbor around Christmas time. This tradition means a lot to him and his family as it’s a great way to directly support families in need.

Other sessions that stuck with Chris were the facility tours offered during the focus lunches, particularly the tours of JBS and CNH. He described the JBS tour as an eye opening experience. These sessions gave him a firsthand look at the huge impact these companies have on the community and the unbelievable scale of their operations. “We are a very hard working community”, Chris noted as he reflected on the challenging nature of these jobs. These tours gained him a newfound appreciation and respect for the individuals who work in these challenging jobs every day.

Chris has held a leadership position for a little over 10 years now, but becoming a leader was not an easy transition. He struggled shifting from being a peer to becoming a leader. He explained, “no one gives you a blueprint or a directed path to follow in regards to being a good leader.”

Chris’s approach to leadership has evolved throughout the years. Today he places much more emphasis on his team’s growth and success rather than his own. He wants to see his team reach their full potential. Chris believes that building a strong, successful team is one of the clearest signs of effective leadership, “I get far more excitement seeing someone in my team succeed than myself.”

When it comes to leadership, he believes the best leaders are “do-ers.” These are the people who take action and maintain a positive mindset. Chris continued by saying that “80% of the people you meet in a day are “don’t-ers.” These are the nay sayers, people who focus on the obstacles. The remaining 20% are the people who take initiative and work to create positive change.

Chris values the network he has built through Leadership Tomorrow because it has connected him with other “do-ers.” Being surrounded by people who are willing to take action has continued to inspire him to stay involved and make a difference. His
message is simple, “Be a do-er.” He believes the strongest leaders are those who remain actively engaged and consistently look for ways to positively impact their community.

As the interview came to a close, Chris emphasized the importance of community involvement and giving back. He encourages us to reflect on “what it means to give.” In what ways can you better serve your community. Ultimately, his message challenges each of us to ask ourselves, “What can I do to make my community a better place.”
