Per NE Appleseed: “Extreme immigration enforcement actions have torn apart Nebraska families and sent harmful ripple effects across our state.

It’s essential that Nebraskans know their constitutional rights, how to assert them, and what we can all do to respond to extreme enforcement actions at this moment.

We invite you to join us on Thursday, September 4 at noon for a virtual Know Your Rights training.”

From odes to the ever-scarce sleep to revisiting the rhythms of our younger selves, it was wonderful to open our minds and explore our words of expression. Modern physicians face unprecedented challenges in healthcare delivery, from navigating complex administrative systems to advocating for patients within increasingly constrained environments. The emotional toll of these responsibilities often creates a disconnect between what physicians experience and what they can effectively communicate to create change.

In this episode of Advocacy is Medicine, Nebraska’s former state poet Matt Mason discusses how structured writing practices help physicians process workplace stress and develop clearer advocacy messages. Through physician writing groups, doctors are learning to articulate frustrations with healthcare systems, document successful patient advocacy cases, and identify specific areas needing reform. The clinical approach is straightforward: regular writing with peer feedback transforms overwhelming emotions into actionable communication strategies. For physicians seeking to strengthen their advocacy voice while managing professional stress, writing offers both therapeutic benefit and practical skill development in healthcare leadership.
