"Before I became a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) with Heartland CASA, volunteering for CASA was something I had thought about doing for a long time. I always told myself I would sign up someday, but I never took that first step.

Finally, I did.

I took that first step because I wanted to help a child—and I have never once second-guessed that decision.

CASA truly makes a difference in the lives of children in our local communities. Many children involved in the foster care system are appointed a CASA volunteer by a judge. As CASA volunteers, our role is to give children a voice within a legal system that can sometimes make it difficult for their voices to be heard.

CASA volunteers become involved in nearly every aspect of a child's life. We communicate with placements, biological parents, therapists and other service providers, medical professionals, schools, and anyone else involved in the child's care. We advocate for the child's needs and help make sure they have access to the resources and support they deserve.

Sometimes, that advocacy looks like something big. Other times, it looks like something as simple as a pair of shoes.

I've seen this firsthand in one of my own cases. A 15-year-old I advocate for really wanted a black pair of Crocs. I told her, "I'll see what I can do."

With the help of CASA, we were able to provide her with a pair of black Crocs of her very own. She was incredibly happy to have something that belonged to her—something she didn't have to share or return, and something that didn't come with any stipulations attached.

To some people, it might seem like just a pair of shoes.

To that child, it meant so much more.

Those moments are why CASA matters. Seeing the impact we can make in the lives of children is truly amazing.
