What would you say to someone who is thinking about becoming a volunteer?
"When you start a case, you'll see the pain a child is experiencing in their eyes. As a CASA, you will make a difference; you'll be someone they trust. You will laugh with them and cry with them. You will have up days and down days. They may not remember your name in years to come, but they will always remember your kindness and support." - Bridget Junkala, May Volunteer of the Month

We asked Bridget, our Volunteer of the Month, to tell us about a proud moment she had volunteering.
"The oldest child from my first case graduates from high school this month. She got her CNA license while in high school and already has an excellent job. We are going to work on her college applications soon, so she can work on getting her RN. It's always a proud moment when a family does the hard work, goes to therapy, and is eventually reunited."

Congratulations to Bridget Junkala, our May Volunteer of the Month!
Bridget was sworn in as a CASA volunteer in 2019 and quickly made an impact. She served on one case before stepping into the role of peer coordinator in 2020. Since then, she has helped supervise volunteers on 32 additional cases, becoming an incredible source of support, encouragement, and guidance for both volunteers and staff alike.
Bridget’s extensive experience and knowledge of the Jefferson County school system has been invaluable to CASA volunteers across the organization, not just the volunteers she directly supervises. She is always willing to jump in to help navigate educational challenges, offer thoughtful advice, and advocate for what is best for the children we serve. Her positivity, kindness, and calm presence make her someone volunteers naturally turn to for support.

Thank you for helping us celebrate 25 years of advocacy at this year’s Champions for Children Breakfast!
We are so grateful to everyone who attended and supported this event. It was a wonderful morning, and guests had the opportunity to hear from Emily Pennell about her experience with CASA as a youth, an attorney, and now a CASA volunteer.
Emily’s passion for advocacy is an inspiration to anyone wanting to support children and families in the child welfare system. From having a CASA volunteer at 14 to becoming the first foster youth in the state of Colorado to become a Guardian Ad Litem and Counsel for Youth, Emily wants every child going through the system to know that they can dream big.
If you were unable to attend, there’s still time to make a difference. Your donation helps support youth like Emily, ensuring every child has a consistent, caring advocate by their side.

Five years in foster care, five foster homes, four caseworkers, three guardians ad litem, two CASA volunteers, one magistrate.

Our speaker, Emily Pennell, didn’t have a typical teenage and young adult experience. But that hasn’t deterred her from making a difference in the lives of other kids navigating the child welfare system. In fact, it motivated her to become an attorney who represents children and youth in court. Emily spent five years in foster care in Jefferson County, and last year became our first CASA volunteer who went through our CASA program as a youth.

Join us at Champions for Children on May 14th!
